Arsenal midfielder Eberechi Eze had to swallow a bitter pill in a virtual duel against content creator IShowSpeed. A 4-5 defeat in an EA Sports FC 27 match left him bound to a promise to perform a combined celebration blending Cristiano Ronaldo's iconic move with Speed's signature style the next time he scores on a real pitch.
The incident is more than just online banter. For Eze, who joined Arsenal in the summer of 2025, the moment was a small test amid the mounting pressure of an increasingly tight Premier League competition. Earlier, Chelsea midfielder Cole Palmer had humiliated Speed with an 18-0 scoreline without allowing a single shot, so Eze's defeat adds its own color to the trend of Premier League players testing the YouTuber's ability.
During the session, Eze initially refused Speed's request to imitate a wild dance and do a somersault. In the end, however, he agreed to a compromise: combining Ronaldo's 'Siuuu' celebration with Speed's signature barking. "Send me the video and I'll do it. I can't believe I lost," Eze said, as quoted by Sports Illustrated on Friday (16/10/2026).
Eze's signature celebration has been forming a cross with two fingers, a tribute to his Christian faith. The promise to Speed, however, will add a new layer to his identity on the pitch. Though it may seem trivial, gestures like this are often part of player branding in the digital era, extending their reach beyond conventional football.
On the other hand, Eze's performances for Arsenal have not been entirely stable. In the 2025/2026 Premier League, he recorded the lowest minutes of his career in the competition. His goal contributions also tended to be concentrated in certain periods, with five of his seven league goals coming against Tottenham Hotspur. Nevertheless, the 28-year-old has shown signs of a revival by opening his account for the 2026/2027 season when Arsenal beat Lille 3-0 in midweek, where he stood out on the left side of the attack while Christos Tzolis was out injured.
Competition in Arsenal's attacking line remains fierce. Although Tzolis has yet to recover, Eze must compete with Noni Madueke, who usually backs up Bukayo Saka on the right wing but was shifted to the left when Arsenal beat Leeds United 2-1 last week. Now, Eze is expected to continue his positive trend when Arsenal travel to Nottingham Forest's home ground on Sunday (18/10/2026). Across his career in the Premier League and Championship, Eze has faced Nottingham Forest 12 times but has scored only once—while still playing for Crystal Palace in May 2025.
For Indonesian football fans, Eze's story reflects how interactions between players and content creators are increasingly blurring the line between sport and entertainment. Amid the flood of digital content, moments like this can be an attraction in themselves, especially for younger generations familiar with platforms such as YouTube and TikTok. Yet the real challenge remains consistency of performance on the pitch: will the celebration promise come to pass when Arsenal face Nottingham Forest, or will it instead become a distraction amid the tight race toward the top of the table?
