Luca Williams-Barnett: Tottenham's Young Gem Ready to Fill Dele Alli's Void

The name Luca Williams-Barnett is emerging in Tottenham Hotspur circles. The 17-year-old attacking midfielder is seen as the answer to The Lilywhites' classic problem: finding a successor to Dele Alli in the number 10 role.
Since Dele's departure in 2022, Tottenham have yet to find a figure capable of filling the creative void in midfield. Christian Eriksen also left long ago, leaving a gap that remains only partially filled. The Spurs management has brought in several names, but the results have been inconsistent.
This season, coach Roberto De Zerbi briefly placed Mateus Fernandes in that role. However, the decision raised questions because Fernandes is not comfortable playing there. De Zerbi also admitted his displeasure with Fernandes' performance after the 2-3 defeat to Aston Villa.
Amid those limitations, Williams-Barnett has emerged as a fresh option. The young player caught attention with his exploits for the U21 team: 16 goals and 8 assists in 20 appearances. That record earned him the label of a "precious diamond" from De Zerbi.
Last pre-season was a stage for Williams-Barnett to show his quality. He scored a panenka goal in a penalty shootout against Sydney FC, then impressed against MK Dons and Auckland. He even contributed a goal in the final pre-season match against Hoffenheim.
"He's a very good player. He has huge potential. You can see the quality he has. The next step is to develop his playing habits, but having a player like him who is not afraid, who is confident trying things in matches, and who is not affected if he loses the ball, I think his future is bright," said Tottenham defender Ben Davies.
Praise also came from GOAL journalist Sean Walsh, who sees a "Dele shadow" in Williams-Barnett's playing style. His dribbling ability, vision, and goalscoring instinct are said to recall Dele Alli's prime.
Even so, Williams-Barnett's minutes with the senior team remain limited. He has played just 12 minutes in official competitions this season. The situation raises a question: will De Zerbi soon give him a bigger chance, given Tottenham's attack is hit by injuries?
Xavi Simons is still recovering from an ACL injury, while Dejan Kulusevski and James Maddison have just returned from injury. This condition opens an opportunity for Williams-Barnett to enter the first-team rotation.
For Tottenham fans in Indonesia, Williams-Barnett's emergence could be a new hope. Premier League clubs are indeed often a reference point for football fans in the country, and a talented young player is always interesting to follow. If Williams-Barnett can break into the first team, he could become a new idol, much like Dele Alli in his time.
Going forward, De Zerbi's decision to give Williams-Barnett playing time will be in the spotlight. Will he become a long-term solution, or will he sink under the pressure? Only time will tell, but one thing is certain: Tottenham have a gem ready to be polished.
