Oscar-winning actress Angelina Jolie has officially sold her historic home in the Los Feliz area of Los Angeles for $24.75 million. That figure is far below the asking price set in May, namely $29.85 million, a difference of more than $5 million. The sale marks a new chapter for Jolie, who had previously expressed a desire to spend more time outside Los Angeles.
The 11,000-square-foot property with six bedrooms and ten bathrooms was bought by Jolie in 2017 for $24.5 million, shortly after she separated from Brad Pitt. The house then became the primary residence of her six children: Maddox, Pax, Zahara, Shiloh, and the twins Knox and Vivienne. Now, after the twins turned 18 in July, Jolie is no longer bound by an obligation to stay in Los Angeles for custody.
The house is not just a luxury property. Built in 1913 by architect B. Cooper Corbett, the building was bought by legendary director Cecil B. DeMille in 1916. DeMille then expanded it by buying the neighboring property once inhabited by silent film star Charlie Chaplin, and connected the two buildings with a glass corridor. It is located in the gated Laughlin Park enclave, offering views of the Hollywood Hills up to the Hollywood Sign and Griffith Observatory.
"When you have a big family, you want them to have privacy, peace, safety," Jolie told The Hollywood Reporter, describing why she chose the house. But she also admitted, "I live in Los Angeles because I have to—because of a divorce."
The decision to sell this house aligns with Jolie's plan to move away from the center of the entertainment industry. A source close to Jolie said she has not determined a permanent base, but plans to move around visiting her adult children and spending time in Cambodia. Previously, Jolie was known to have strong ties to Cambodia, where she adopted her first son, Maddox, and the filming location of the biographical film First They Killed My Father.
On the other hand, this sale comes amid Jolie's professional busyness. Her latest film as director, Without Blood, starring Salma Hayek and Demián Bichir, has just been released in theaters after premiering at the Toronto International Film Festival. Jolie is also developing Atelier Jolie, a creative collective she founded in New York, with Brazil mentioned as the first international location candidate, followed by Vienna and Cambodia.
However, the shadow of conflict with Brad Pitt has not completely disappeared. The legal dispute over Château Miraval, the French winery they once owned together, is still ongoing. Pitt's lawyers are reported to have requested additional financial records related to Jolie's sale of her shares in the property. Family conflict also remains in the spotlight, especially after Maddox recently received court approval to change his surname, removing "Pitt" from his legal name.
For the Indonesian public, the story of Jolie's house sale can serve as a mirror of how global celebrities manage property assets amid the dynamics of their personal lives. The luxury property market in areas like Los Feliz is not directly affected by the Indonesian market, but the trend of asset diversification and relocation after a change in family status is often followed by wealthy circles in the country. Moreover, Jolie has ties to Southeast Asia through Cambodia, which could spark speculation about her future in the region.
Going forward, the question is: will Jolie really leave Los Angeles permanently, or is this just a temporary strategy before she returns to the center of the film industry? And how will the continuation of the Miraval dispute affect her asset map? What is clear is that Jolie's move to sell this historic home marks a major shift in her life—from a Hollywood homemaker to a freer citizen of the world.
