Finance Minister Suahasil Nazara said he cannot yet confirm whether the reshuffle of officials within the Directorate General of Taxes (DJP) carried out on September 10, 2026 will be canceled, following a request from Director General of Taxes Bimo Wijayanto. Suahasil said he is still gathering input from all echelon I units before making a decision.
The cancellation request emerged after several strategic positions at DJP were overhauled during the tenure of previous Finance Minister Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa. Bimo, who now heads DJP, believes the reshuffle needs to be reviewed. However, Suahasil was reluctant to speculate on whether cancellation would be the most appropriate option.
"We are still discussing the processes and activities that have already taken place," Suahasil said at the Presidential Palace Complex in Central Jakarta on Wednesday, September 16, 2026. He added that the appointment of officials within the Ministry of Finance has a tiered mechanism and involves all relevant units.
Suahasil stressed the importance of an official structure capable of working across echelon I to strengthen synergy and coordination. According to him, the current combination of officials must be ensured to align with applicable governance. "Sometimes we need a structure that cuts across units so that coordination and synergy at the Finance Ministry remain intact," he said.
To date, Suahasil has not signaled whether the cancellation will be carried out. He only said he would first look at the inauguration process that has already taken place, including hybrid inaugurations involving both in-person and online attendance. "Let's first see what was done yesterday, because some inaugurations were hybrid, some attended in person, so this is a combination of everything," he explained.
"The appointment of officials has its tiers and is carried out jointly by all units. I am still waiting for input from my echelon I colleagues."

For market participants and taxpayers, this uncertainty could affect confidence in the stability of the DJP organization. DJP is a key institution in state revenue, with tax targets that are always challenging. An incomplete reshuffle could potentially disrupt the continuity of the tax reform program, including digitalization and strengthening taxpayer compliance.
Some observers argue that replacing officials within DJP must prioritize professionalism and governance, not merely political transactions. They warn that consistency in tax policy is an important signal for investors, especially amid growing state budget financing needs. If this polemic drags on, the risk of weakening tax revenue and uncertainty in the business climate could loom.
Going forward, Suahasil's decision will be an early test of his leadership at the Finance Ministry. Will he retain the reshuffle results for continuity, or cancel them to embrace all parties? What is clear is that the direction of DJP policy will greatly determine the effectiveness of tax collection and ultimately affect national development.
