Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff openly acknowledged the superiority of Red Bull Racing, which has been dominant lately. In his remarks after the race in Singapore, Wolff said Red Bull's improved performance stemmed from three main factors: car development, the right development direction, and Max Verstappen's ability to extract the maximum potential from his car.
Red Bull did make major changes to their car since the race in Azerbaijan. Updates to the floor, diffuser, sidepod, mirrors, and halo were designed to add aerodynamic load. As a result, Verstappen secured his first win of the season in Bahrain, Malaysia, and then continued the positive trend with a second consecutive victory in Singapore. Wolff also acknowledged that the Milton Keynes-based team is now the benchmark on track.
"You have to take your hat off to what Red Bull have done this season. How they developed the car and everything came together as one package, and then you put Max Verstappen in it. When he feels the car can be driven the way he wants, the result is like this," Wolff said.
On the other hand, Mercedes is still grappling with the evaluation of their latest upgrade package. The Brackley-based team cannot yet confirm whether the new components introduced truly deliver the expected performance gain. Track conditions in Malaysia were deemed unrepresentative for drawing conclusions, making Singapore the next testing ground. An unusual strategy was also employed: Kimi Antonelli ran the new package plus a new front wing, while George Russell kept the old set-up.
Wolff acknowledged that the new Mercedes car requires a very different set-up philosophy from the previous car. He assessed that the performance expected from the upgrade has not fully materialized. Nevertheless, he sees the move as progress in the right direction. "Is this car easy to drive like before? I don't think so. Is the performance as expected? Not yet. But it's a step forward, and in Austin we'll see if it can be consolidated further," he added.
Wolff's remarks highlight the increasingly tight competitive dynamics in Formula 1 ahead of next season. With stable technical regulations, car development is key to staying competitive. Red Bull, able to integrate updates effectively, is now in the leading position. Meanwhile Mercedes, despite having vast resources, is still searching for the right formula to return to the top.
For F1 fans in Indonesia, this rivalry is compelling viewing, especially as more fans follow the progress of the top teams. Red Bull's success in developing the car is also a lesson on the importance of a consistent development direction and a driver's ability to maximize the technical package.
Looking ahead, the big question is whether Mercedes can turn things around and challenge Red Bull for the rest of the season. With the race in Austin as the proving ground, Wolff and his team hope the upgrade package can show its true potential. If not, their focus may shift entirely to preparing for next season, where Wolff predicts the battle between teams will be even fiercer.
