F1 2026: Imola Replaces Abu Dhabi, Antonelli's Title Chances Grow

Formula 1 is preparing to drastically redraw the map of the 2026 season finale. Following the worsening security situation in the Middle East—compounded by reports of successive airstrikes at Riyadh Airport—the world motorsport authority is moving quickly to cancel the Qatar and Abu Dhabi Grands Prix. In their place, the Imola Circuit in Italy is being prepared to host the final round, taking over the role of the Yas Marina Circuit, which usually hosts the crowning of the world champion.
The plan is not mere speculation. Supporting infrastructure at Imola, including the construction of temporary grandstands, is reported to have been quietly underway for the past few months. If the scenario materializes, the Autodromo Enzo e Dino Ferrari will stage the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix on 6 December, taking the date originally allocated to Abu Dhabi. The move comes after F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali had previously expressed a desire to finish the season in the Gulf region, but uncertain geopolitical conditions forced a change of course.
The impact of this calendar change on the title race is significant. In the original schedule, six grands prix remained after Singapore, with a maximum of 150 points on offer. However, if Qatar and Abu Dhabi are replaced by a single race at Imola, the total points available shrink to just 125. This automatically narrows the room for maneuver for the challengers and boosts the chances of the driver leading the standings.
With a 102-point lead, Antonelli's position is currently almost untouchable. The young Mercedes driver can mathematically seal the world title long before the paddock returns to Europe, provided he avoids a catastrophic run of retirements (DNFs) in the United States, Mexico, and Brazil triple-header. If the official calendar is shortened to five races, a win in Austin would immediately secure the title, while also breaking the record as the youngest F1 world champion in history.
"The security situation in the Middle East continues to be monitored by the FIA. However, with the shrinking number of races, the pressure on the challengers to perform perfectly is growing," said a racing analyst who declined to be named.
For the Mercedes team, this prospect is certainly welcome news. They can shift focus from the fierce on-track battle to preparing for a title celebration that is only a matter of time. Meanwhile, other teams such as Ferrari and Red Bull must accept the reality that their chances of catching Antonelli are growing slimmer, even before the race in Austin begins.
On the other hand, the decision also raises questions about the integrity of the competition. A mid-season calendar change for non-sporting reasons could spark debate about fairness for teams that have invested significant resources in racing in the Middle East. However, the safety of drivers, crews, and spectators remains the top priority.
For F1 fans in Indonesia, this dynamic makes for compelling viewing. Although no Indonesian driver is competing, the calendar change shows how external factors can dramatically alter the championship landscape. It is also a reminder that elite sport is never free from the influence of global politics and security.
Going forward, the FIA will continue to monitor developments in the Middle East before making a final decision. If the escalation subsides, the cancellation plan could yet be scrapped. However, with preparations at Imola already underway, F1 appears increasingly inclined to end the season in Europe. Will Antonelli truly seal the title in Austin, or will there be a surprise in the remaining races? All eyes will be on the track.
