McLaren team principal Andrea Stella praised Lando Norris for his swift change of attitude after a clash with his teammate, Oscar Piastri, in the Singapore Grand Prix sprint race. The incident occurred when Norris attempted an overtaking maneuver at Turn 5 on the final lap, which ended in contact and left Piastri unable to finish, while Norris dropped to eighth place.
The stewards decided against a penalty, judging that both drivers contributed to the incident. Nevertheless, McLaren management was reportedly furious about the incident. However, the mood improved in Sunday's main race when Norris finished fourth and voluntarily helped Piastri attack Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton to snatch fifth place.
"I am happy that Lando, at a certain point in the race, adopted this mindset. This is what I expect as a team principal. This is what the 1,000 people working at McLaren expect from our drivers," Stella said.
Stella added that internal discussions were still ongoing, but not to debate Norris's position at the time of the incident, rather to strengthen the sense of togetherness. "What struck me was the reflection that all stakeholders, the team, and the drivers must live together as one team. Upholding the team's interests above individual interests," he stressed.
Norris's change of attitude was clear. A day earlier, he insisted the gap was wide enough that he was entitled to attack. However, after Sunday's race, he admitted the maneuver should not have been made. Piastri also said the incident did not need to happen, but he had already moved on.
Stella said he was very impressed because the statements of regret came quickly from both drivers. "What happened yesterday I classified as unacceptable, and that was a statement from the team principal. But I was very encouraged because that statement also quickly came from our drivers," he added.
McLaren is currently fighting to hold on to third place in the constructors' standings. Red Bull, revived by Max Verstappen's victories in the last two races, is now just seven points behind. This situation demands team cohesion, especially since McLaren's performance has not returned to the podium in the last three rounds.
For Formula 1 fans in Indonesia, McLaren's internal dynamics are a valuable lesson about the importance of discipline and teamwork in top-tier racing. Although no Indonesian driver is directly involved, the tight competition in the constructors' standings can influence the strategies of other teams, including how they manage drivers' egos for maximum results.
Going forward, the big question is whether Norris and Piastri can truly put the team's interests above personal ambition, especially as pressure from Red Bull grows. If the consistency of attitude shown by Norris in the main race can be maintained, McLaren has a strong chance of securing a top-three position. However, if friction resurfaces, their position could erode.
