PDIP Chairwoman Megawati Soekarnoputri and President Prabowo Subianto are rumored to hold a follow-up meeting on October 17, coinciding with Prabowo's 75th birthday. The news emerged after Prabowo's visit to Megawati's residence on Teuku Umar, Menteng, Central Jakarta, on Monday (28/9) evening, which was described as an initial step to thaw relations between the two figures.
PDIP Central Executive Board Chairman Said Abdullah expressed hope that the next meeting could take place on that date. "There will indeed be a follow-up meeting, insyaAllah. Hopefully the follow-up meeting can be on October 17 when our President has his birthday," Said said at the parliamentary complex, Tuesday (29/9). The statement confirms that communication between the two camps continues, although details of the agenda remain uncertain.
Prabowo's visit was brief, about 40 minutes, and according to Said did not discuss practical political matters. The President only conveyed his condolences over the passing of Megawati's younger brother, Guruh Soekarnoputra. "It was indeed brief because the President was taking time out of his busy schedule," Said said. He also dismissed the issue that the Election Bill was a topic of discussion, stressing that the deliberation of the regulation is in the domain of the DPR and involves party chairmen.
During the meeting, Megawati was said to have prayed that Prabowo could complete his full five-year term. Said stressed the importance of the tradition of adhering to the constitution. "The tradition of adhering to the constitution is that if a government is elected for 5 years, we guard it for 5 years," he said. The prayer was seen as a subtle signal of political support, even though PDIP has long been known as an opposition party.
"This meeting was very personal, and the two of them had no other discussions, let alone political ones. This meeting was very good, maintaining goodwill with one another," said Said Abdullah.
The meeting drew attention because it marked the first public interaction between Megawati and Prabowo after their relationship had long been strained following the 2024 Presidential Election. The presence of several Gerindra and PDIP elites at the meeting reinforced the impression that there is an effort to build a communication bridge between the parties. Nevertheless, Said stressed that the meeting was purely a goodwill gathering and involved no political negotiation.
For the Indonesian public, the follow-up meeting on October 17 could be an important moment to read the direction of the coalition ahead. If it does take place, Prabowo's birthday could be used as a venue for political consolidation, or merely a religious and family event. Either way, the dynamics of the Megawati-Prabowo relationship will continue to be monitored, especially ahead of the deliberation of the Election Bill currently rolling in the DPR. Will the next meeting produce a political agreement, or remain merely a personal meeting? The public awaits the answer.
