Liverpool Eye Tyrick Mitchell, Crystal Palace Left-Back Available on the Cheap

Liverpool are reportedly exploring the possibility of signing Crystal Palace left-back Tyrick Mitchell at a price far below the usual market value for Premier League players. The interest has emerged after Milos Kerkez was deemed to have been inconsistent since arriving for a £40 million fee.

According to a TEAMtalk report, the Reds are now competing with Manchester United and Chelsea for Mitchell's signature. The 25-year-old's contract at Selhurst Park expires in 2027, leaving Palace in a vulnerable position if extension talks are not concluded soon. This situation opens the door for interested clubs to sign him for a relatively low fee in the upcoming January transfer window.

Palace are not standing still. The club's management is reported to be preparing to do everything possible to keep Mitchell, who has made 212 Premier League appearances and become a key pillar on the left side of defence. Even so, interest from big clubs has made the future of the England-born defender increasingly uncertain.

Liverpool's need for a more consistent left-back is the backdrop to this move. Kerkez, signed from Bournemouth, remains under scrutiny after a poor display against Newcastle United in the opening match. In that game, he won only four of ten ground duels, lost the ball 15 times, and did not complete a single successful cross.

"Kerkez is like the Darwin Nunez of full-backs. Everything is rushed, head down and running," said Jamie Carragher, a Sky Sports pundit, in his analysis.

Nevertheless, Carragher understands manager Andoni Iraola's decision to keep faith with Kerkez. According to him, the Hungary international still has more than three months to prove his quality before the winter transfer window opens. However, if his form does not improve, Liverpool are said to be ready to shift their focus to Mitchell.

For Palace, losing Mitchell would be a severe blow. Besides being their first-choice left-back, he has also shown attacking ability by scoring two Premier League goals this season—the highest among Palace players. Last May, HLTCO observer Dan Cook even described his defensive ability as "outstanding".

From an Indonesian perspective, this transfer saga reflects how Premier League clubs are becoming increasingly shrewd at exploiting contract situations to get the best price. Liverpool, who have a large fan base in Indonesia, are certainly in the spotlight. If Mitchell does land at Anfield, it could affect the dynamics of the back line that has long been a concern for the national football public, especially in the context of the title race.
