Manchester United are reported to have opened a line of communication with Julian Nagelsmann and his representatives. The move signals that the club's management under INEOS is beginning to map out coaching options for next season, even though Michael Carrick's position has not been formally evaluated.
The information first surfaced through transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano. According to the report, Nagelsmann is on a three-name shortlist under consideration by United, alongside former Newcastle United coach Eddie Howe and former Chelsea architect Antonio Conte. Talks with the Nagelsmann camp are described as exploratory, not a formal offer.
What makes Nagelsmann stand out is not just his track record. The German Football Association (DFB) is reported to have paid off the potential compensation attached to his contract, so United would not need to spend extra to bring him in. This administrative advantage sets him apart from Howe, who is still under contract with Newcastle and could demand a large compensation fee.
United's approach to Nagelsmann is tied to concerns over the team's recent performances. The 0-3 defeat to Bournemouth at Old Trafford last weekend exposed a fundamental weakness: United often lose duels for the ball and struggle to win possession back. Statistics show Carrick's side are losing out on turnovers per 90 minutes compared with the top teams in the Premier League.
This is where Nagelsmann's value becomes relevant. In the 2021/22 season, his Bayern Munich were recorded as the team with the most turnovers in the Bundesliga. He managed to instil an aggressive off-the-ball playing principle at one of the world's biggest clubs, and it ended in a league title. His ability to maintain a tactical identity under great pressure is the main draw for United, who are searching for a direction of play.
"Nagelsmann is the best young coach in Europe right now. He has the courage to implement his ideas at a big club," said journalist Josh Bunting, as quoted in the report.
Even so, Nagelsmann's journey has not been entirely smooth. His tenure with the German national team drew criticism, especially after a series of disappointing results in international tournaments. However, the experience of managing Bayern and Die Mannschaft at just 39 shows his capacity to take on high-pressure jobs and see them through in his own way.
The comparison with Jose Mourinho has also come up. Not without reason, Nagelsmann's firmness in his principles and willingness to take risks recall the young Mourinho who arrived at Chelsea in 2004. At the time, Mourinho came with the "Special One" label and immediately proved it with trophies. United, who have spent 13 years looking for a worthy successor to Sir Alex Ferguson, appear more interested in the young Mourinho than the mature one who left Old Trafford with a less harmonious record.
INEOS's decision to keep Carrick in place for now has raised questions. The chanting of Carrick's name from the Old Trafford stands after the defeat to Bournemouth was read as a gesture of sympathy, not full support. Pressure is mounting ahead of the match against Chelsea, and another bad result could accelerate United's move toward Nagelsmann.
For Indonesian football fans, the dynamics at Old Trafford remain worth watching. Man United are one of the clubs with the largest fan bases in the country, and every coaching change is always a hot topic on social media and in supporter communities. If Nagelsmann does land, expectations for United's play are predicted to soar, along with hopes for a clearer tactical identity.
Going forward, the focus is on two things: whether Carrick can turn things around in the upcoming matches, and how seriously United pursue talks with Nagelsmann. If poor results continue, it is not impossible that Old Trafford will soon welcome a new era with the coach touted as the next Mourinho.
