Manchester United have chosen to keep Michael Carrick in the head coach's seat for now, but the storm behind the scenes has not subsided. The heavy 0-3 defeat to Bournemouth last week nearly ended Carrick's tenure, before the management decided to give him a second chance. That decision has not immediately eased speculation about who will be the next architect at Old Trafford.
United are currently languishing in 16th place in the Premier League, just one point above the relegation zone, and have not won in eight matches across all competitions. Carrick will lead the team away to Chelsea on Saturday, but his future remains a major question mark. Sky Sports reported that sporting director Jason Wilcox and CEO Omar Berrada had considered a number of alternatives before finally allowing Carrick to continue in the role.
Amid that uncertainty, the name Cesc Fabregas has emerged as an alternative candidate. The former Arsenal and Chelsea midfielder now manages Como in Serie A and has taken the promoted club to the Champions League next season. According to a report by The Telegraph, some figures inside Old Trafford believe United should pay more serious attention to bringing in Fabregas. Support for him is not trivial, even though he is still a young coach without experience managing a club as big as United.
Fabregas himself brushed off questions about the possibility of replacing Carrick before the two teams met in Italy. He argued that discussing a coaching position still held by someone else was inappropriate. However, his track record at Como makes his name hard to ignore. Last season, he led Como to a fourth-place finish in Serie A and secured a ticket to Europe's elite competition, an impressive achievement for a club with limited resources.
"Support within United is split between several options, and the uncertainty over who is the right replacement helps explain why Carrick is still being retained this week," wrote Luke Edwards of The Telegraph.
Besides Fabregas, the name Eddie Howe is said to be Wilcox's favorite. Howe is widely known for his work at Bournemouth and Newcastle United, and is considered to understand the character of the Premier League well. Meanwhile, Julian Nagelsmann has experience managing Bayern Munich and the German national team, while Antonio Conte brings a track record of titles in several top European leagues. Unai Emery, who now manages Aston Villa, is also on the list of considerations. However, no single name has truly been agreed upon, and disagreements among the board are the main obstacle.
For United, choosing a coach is not merely a matter of tactics. The club is at a crossroads between the short-term ambition of escaping the red zone and a long-term project that requires stability. Carrick, who was previously an assistant coach, is considered not yet capable of bringing significant change. His relationship with captain Bruno Fernandes also heated up after the Portuguese midfielder questioned the team's tactics following the defeat to Como. Fernandes was then benched against Bournemouth, although Carrick insisted the captain remains an important part of the team's plans.
If the management are truly serious about pursuing Fabregas, they must convince the 37-year-old coach that leaving Como is a step forward. The project Fabregas is building in Italy offers stability and full control, something he may not necessarily get at Old Trafford, which is known for its fondness for changing coaches. On the other hand, United have a historical and financial appeal that is hard to refuse, but with the team in a poor position, that offer could be a double-edged sword.
The big question: will United give Carrick a chance until the end of the season, or will they move quickly before the winter transfer window? One thing is certain: every decision made in the coming weeks will determine the club's direction for years to come. If they take a wrong step, it is not impossible that United will have to endure a season even tougher than this one.
