Third-Choice Goalkeeper Crisis: Meslier Seen as a Burden, Arsenal Told to Get Their House in Order

Arsenal had to accept the bitter reality of being knocked out of the Carabao Cup after a humiliating defeat to Fleetwood Town. But behind that poor result, sharp scrutiny has emerged over Mikel Arteta's decision to field Illan Meslier, the goalkeeper signed on a free transfer last summer.
Meslier, previously third choice at Leeds United, suddenly got the chance to join a Premier League giant. The decision immediately raised big questions. The French goalkeeper is known for frequent crucial blunders, which run counter to the high standards Arsenal have set in recent seasons.
In the match against Fleetwood, Meslier did not make a fatal error that led to a goal. However, his performance showed a significant drop in quality. He failed to anticipate Fleetwood's penalty kicks and generally looked nervous and lacking in confidence. The quality on display was far below expectations, even for a mere backup on the bench.
Arteta's decision to sign Meslier is like repeating the dark history of the Kim Kallstrom transfer in 2014. At the time, the Swedish midfielder made only four appearances and is regarded as one of the strangest purchases in Arsenal's history. Even Arsene Wenger, the manager at the time, admitted he would not have signed Kallstrom if he had had more time to consider it. Now, the shadow of a similar mistake haunts Arteta.
If Arsenal really needed a third goalkeeper, it would be wiser to give a chance to a young goalkeeper from the academy. They have the potential to develop and understand the club's philosophy. Meanwhile Meslier, already 25, cannot be expected to improve rapidly. His presence actually hinders the development of young talent and burdens the club's wage budget.
"The decision to bring in Meslier feels strange. He does not have enough quality to compete at Arsenal's level, even as a backup. It would be better to give playing time to an academy goalkeeper who can develop," said an English football observer.
Criticism of Meslier is also inseparable from Arsenal's problems up front. Kai Havertz and Viktor Gyokeres both turned in disappointing performances, reflecting an imbalanced squad. Arteta faces a big dilemma: fix a defense that has turned out to be fragile, or find a solution for a blunt attack. In this context, Meslier's presence only adds to the burden of problems that must be resolved quickly.
For Arsenal, the failure in the Carabao Cup could be an alarm that squad depth is uneven. The club needs to carry out a thorough evaluation, especially in the recruitment of backup players. The same mistake must not be repeated and damage the positive momentum built over the past two seasons.
Going forward, will Arteta take decisive action by cutting Meslier from the long-term plan? Or instead give him a risky second chance? Arsenal supporters surely hope a wise decision is made soon, before the goalkeeper problem becomes a time bomb that explodes at a crucial moment.
