Naoki Hamaguchi is not waiting for the April 2027 launch of Final Fantasy VII Revelation to show his hand. In an interview session at Paris Game Week 2026 that has circulated widely in the community, the director of the remake trilogy laid out three main pillars: a narrative that delays its climax, a world map that flows without interruption, and a combat system that lets players choose their own level of complexity.
The most striking decision lies in how the story is built. Instead of using the meteor as a trigger for a race against time toward Sephiroth, Revelation deliberately slows the pace. The characters are invited to delve into the world, interact with its inhabitants, and undergo personal trials before truly understanding why they fight. As a consequence, side missions no longer serve as filler but as part of the game's emotional architecture. It is a fairly bold reversal for a title whose broad plot is already widely known.
On the technical side, Hamaguchi claims his team invested considerable resources to ensure a massive map can load without loading screens. When players leap from the Highwind, most of the world appears at low resolution; high detail is loaded only as players approach, then released again as distance increases. This kind of asset streaming strategy is common in modern open-world games, but applying it at the scale of Final Fantasy VII โ including the Midgar and Deepground areas shown in a trailer โ is a test in itself. If it succeeds, exploration will not be disrupted by transitions that break immersion.
The classic concern of open-world games โ players exploring too far and becoming too strong โ is addressed through Dynamic Mode. By adjusting enemy levels to follow the player's level, the development team hopes players can complete as much side content as possible without losing the challenge when they return to the main path. Hamaguchi and combat director Teruki Endo are said to have tested the game build themselves to ensure Revelation remains completable whether or not players use the FITS system.
FITS itself serves as an optional layer that grants special properties and changes a character's fighting style. Players who are reluctant to touch it can still finish the game; those who want to experiment are given room to try various combinations. Combined with the ability to store five equipment presets per character โ covering materia, weapons, and accessories โ combat is directed toward situational flexibility rather than mere stat increases. Presets can be swapped between battles, so players can prepare a specific formation for a particular boss without having to set everything up from scratch.
Hamaguchi stressed that his current priority is to finish Revelation as well as possible, but he is open to staying involved in subsequent projects.
That statement opens speculation about Hamaguchi's future once the trilogy is complete. He mentioned at least three possibilities: working on a new installment in the Final Fantasy series, developing an original AAA IP, or leading another remake project. For the last option, however, he believes it should be handed to another team. This stance points to a more decentralized division of labor within Square Enix, as well as a signal that Hamaguchi does not intend to make remakes his only career ground.
For the Indonesian market, Revelation's impact is felt more in the community and game retail ecosystem. The remake trilogy has been a driver of console and graphics card sales in the hardcore fan segment, and the April 2027 schedule will likely trigger a wave of device upgrades ahead of release. Discussions in local forums will also be colored by debate over Dynamic Mode: whether enemy level adjustment is seen as an elegant solution or as removing the sense of achievement. Similar questions have arisen when a number of open-world games applied similar scaling, and Indonesian players' reactions usually split between those chasing time efficiency and those who enjoy grinding.
What remains unanswered, of course, is how large Revelation's map is and how deeply the FITS system affects the final battles. Square Enix is still keeping those details under wraps, and Hamaguchi has only given a broad picture. If execution matches the promise, Revelation could be a finale that not only concludes the story but also sets a new standard for large-scale RPG remakes. The question then: will players embrace the freedom on offer, or will they instead miss the narrative pressure that has long been synonymous with Final Fantasy VII?
