Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) fans were shocked by the unexpected appearance of Raza Hamidmi al-Wazar, the villain who first appeared in the film Iron Man (2008), in the sixth episode of the series VisionQuest. The character, played by Faran Tahir, returns after an absence of nearly two decades, reviving memories of the origins of Tony Stark's conflict with the terrorist organization Ten Rings.
In Iron Man, Raza is depicted as the leader of the Afghanistan branch of the Ten Rings. He led the attack that kidnapped Tony Stark and held him in a cave, forcing Stark to build a missile. However, Stark instead created the Mark 1 armor and escaped, leaving Raza with severe burns on his face. It was later revealed that Raza had been hired by Obadiah Stane to kill Stark, but he did not know the identity of his target. That mistake led to failure and prompted Stane to come and retrieve the Mark 1 armor, then incapacitate Raza with an electric weapon and order his men to shoot dead the Ten Rings members. Viewers then assumed Raza died in that scene.
However, the sixth episode of VisionQuest contradicts that assumption. In a scene in Madripoor, Vision (Paul Bettany) is arguing with the mercenary Paladin (Todd Stashwick) when Raza and a group of armed men storm the bar. Raza reminds Paladin that his contract has been revoked and asks him to hand over Vision. He also mentions having adamantium bullets capable of wounding Vision. Paladin, recognizing Raza's voice, throws a jab: "Between a former Stark associate and the Ten Rings' torture chambers, shouldn't you be dead or in chains?"
The dialogue implies that Raza has severed ties with the Ten Rings, possibly because of his failure in Iron Man or because he betrayed them by making a deal with Stane. Now, Raza operates as a mercenary, on par with Paladin. His brief but surprising appearance shows VisionQuest's willingness to dig into MCU history, although it is not explained how Raza escaped Stane's firing squad.
Raza's return is not merely an easter egg. It signals that the MCU is increasingly serious about using old characters to enrich its narrative. Since its debut in Iron Man, the Ten Rings has grown into a more complex organization, as seen in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. Raza's presence in VisionQuest could serve as a bridge to further explain the factions within the Ten Rings and how the organization evolved after the departure of its leader.
For Vision himself, the encounter with Raza adds another layer of conflict. Vision, a creation of Tony Stark, now faces Stark's old enemy, creating its own irony. Will Vision inherit Stark's enmity, or will he use the situation to uncover the truth about the Ten Rings' past? The series seems to want to explore Stark's legacy from a different perspective.
On the other hand, fans in Indonesia may recognize Raza as the antagonist who once threatened Stark at the start of his adventures. His return could trigger nostalgia for viewers who grew up with the MCU. But more than that, it is a reminder that in the Marvel universe, death is often not the end. Characters who appear to be dead can return with a new agenda.
With VisionQuest still having several episodes left, speculation about Raza's future role is growing. Will he return as an ally or an enemy? Will he reveal secrets of the Ten Rings that have not yet been uncovered? What is certain is that Raza's return after two decades shows that the MCU has not forgotten the roots of its story. We will just have to wait and see whether other surprises will appear in the coming episodes.
