Developer studio Housemarque officially launched the first major update for Saros, titled Zenith, today, Friday (local time). The update is free and injects a number of new modes and accessibility features aimed at two camps at once: newcomers who often feel overwhelmed and veteran players hungry for more challenge.
The move is an important bet for Housemarque, especially since Saros—a PlayStation 5 exclusive—has been slow off the starting line. Data from Alinea Analytics shows the game has sold only about 300 thousand units in its first two weeks. That figure is modest for a game that has received critical praise, particularly because its surreal visuals and bullet-hell gameplay are seen as successfully carrying on the legacy of Returnal, even though some reviewers felt its difficulty was lowered too much.
The Zenith update appears to address two problems at once: friendlier accessibility and deeper post-completion content. For new players, Housemarque has embedded a Slow Game Speed option that lets users slow the pace of enemy projectiles. This effect can be activated manually or automatically when a barrage of bullets approaches. The studio calls this feature a compromise between making the game easier and preserving the lifeblood of the bullet-hell genre, which demands quick reflexes.
In addition, there is an Auto-fire feature that makes the character automatically shoot toward the enemy being targeted. This allows players to focus more on maneuvering to avoid incoming projectiles. Nevertheless, Housemarque stresses that reloading must still be done manually, and perfect reload still requires pressing a button at the right moment. These two features are expected to reduce the on-screen chaos that often frustrates new players.
For veterans, Zenith introduces Overlord Rush, a boss rush mode that lets players challenge the Overlords—the game's main bosses—to compete for leaderboard positions. The mode is divided into three sets: Incursion and Ascension each contain three Overlords, while Totality requires players to face eight bosses in sequence.
The update also expands the Carcosan Modifiers system, optional modifiers that can make the game easier (Protection Modifiers) or harder (Trial Modifiers). Zenith adds 10 new Protection and 10 new Trial modifiers. One example of a Protection modifier is Corruption Melee Enhancement, which releases Corruption to increase melee attack damage.
The new modifiers are tied to a New Game Plus mode called Eclipse Layers. After completing the game for the first time, a new node will appear in the Armor Matrix in the Passage hub area. Opening that node allows players to pass through a gate to the next Eclipse Layer, which requires more Carcosan Modifiers to proceed. In this mode, Arjun—the protagonist—wears a crown and golden armor; the crown grows larger as modifiers increase. A high-level crown unlocks access to hidden messages scattered throughout the game world.
"We want to make sure that features that make the game easier do not erode Saros's core identity as a bullet-hell," Housemarque said in its official statement, as quoted from the PlayStation Blog.
For the domestic game industry, Housemarque's move can serve as a mirror. Local developers releasing games in challenging genres often get stuck in a binary choice: maintain high difficulty for prestige, or lower it for the market. The Saros approach—providing accessibility options without stripping away the essence—offers a middle path that can be adopted, especially for games targeting the global market through platforms such as Steam and PlayStation Store.
Looking ahead, the challenge is clear: is this update enough to boost Saros's still-struggling sales? With a free price and a fairly broad feature set, Zenith has a chance to attract players who were previously hesitant because of its reputation for difficulty. However, Housemarque also needs to ensure this update is not merely a cosmetic patch. If the community response is positive, it is not impossible that Saros will follow in the footsteps of Returnal, which gradually found its audience after release. The public now waits to see whether Zenith will be a turning point or merely a footnote in the history of the Finnish studio.
