PSIM Yogyakarta has officially parted ways with head coach Jean-Paul van Gastel after a string of poor results in the BRI Super League 2026/2027. The decision was announced directly by PSIM President Director Liana Tasno at Graha Pandawa Building, Yogyakarta City Hall, and immediately drew responses from two major supporter groups, Brajamusti and The Maident.
Brajamusti President RM Satrio Wijayanto described the dismissal as a logical consequence of the team's poor record. According to him, PSIM's performance from last season through the most recent match has fallen far short of expectations. “Out of 21 matches, only three wins were secured. We should be grateful the management took a firm step because the team's performance has not improved,” Satrio said on Saturday (17/10/2026).
Echoing Satrio, The Maident Chairman Rendy Agung Prasetya hopes the management's decision becomes a momentum for Laskar Mataram's revival. He said he had heard Liana Tasno's explanation directly and considered that the management had listened to the supporters' aspirations. “PSIM's journey this season has been very poor. Hopefully with this change, the team can get back on the track because there are still about 12 matches in the first round,” Rendy said.
Supporters' disappointment had actually peaked before the match against PSM Makassar. In a guyub sedulur gathering with the management, supporter representatives asked the team to secure at least six points from three matches considered crucial. However, that hope was dashed immediately after PSIM fell to PSM. “The three points are gone because we lost to PSM. We hope the players respond positively in the next match,” Rendy explained.
Despite the disappointment, Brajamusti stressed its full support for the team. Satrio urged the players to keep their spirits up and not be affected by pressure. “We will always support PSIM in Liga 1, no matter what happens. My message to the players: keep your spirits up, we are by your side,” he said.
A coaching change mid-competition is indeed not ideal, but PSIM's management considers a thorough evaluation necessary to save the season. With 12 matches remaining in the first round, the time for the new coach to fix the squad is fairly tight. The nearest challenge is facing Bhayangkara FC and IsenMulang, two matches that supporters regard as a heavy test.
Going forward, the Yogyakarta public will be watching whether this management decision truly becomes a turning point or instead adds to the uncertainty. What is clear is that the pressure now shifts to the dressing room and the new coaching staff: whether they can use the rest of the first round to climb up, or instead sink deeper.
