After more than a decade without a continuation, the classic fantasy series Redwall has finally announced a new book titled Orphans of Mossflower, scheduled for release on 7 September 2027. The announcement marks the revival of a franchise that last released a novel in 2011, three months after its creator, Brian Jacques, died. For devoted readers, the news also answers a long-standing question about the fate of a manuscript long believed to still exist.
Orphans of Mossflower will be the 23rd entry in the Redwall chronology. The publisher is also preparing a box set of the previous 22 novels, designed to mark four decades of a series that first appeared in the UK in 1986. Official details about the plot, however, remain very sparse. Notably, the book is still credited as a work by Brian Jacques—a claim that has immediately sparked discussion among fans about how far the late author was involved.
Speculation about the existence of a 23rd novel had in fact surfaced long ago. In 2010, publisher Penguin held a contest giving one fan the chance to name a character in the next Redwall novel. The winner only emerged in 2015 and shared details about that character. When the character was not found in The Rogue Crew, the Redwall community concluded that another manuscript remained unpublished. That theory has now proven correct.
Although there is no official synopsis yet, the title Orphans of Mossflower offers a hint about the story's direction. Mossflower Woods is a location that recurs throughout the series, with Redwall Abbey as its main landmark. The word "orphans" in the title suggests that the abbey's inhabitants are forced to flee because of some threat. That suspicion is reinforced by a leak from the 2010 contest winner mentioning a character named Reisa Kartwell, a mapmaker. According to an account uploaded to the Redwall wiki, Reisa's map becomes crucial when the inhabitants of Redwall must move quickly to Salamandastron because their abbey is attacked.
Jacques's narrative pattern in his later books did tend to be sequential, rather than jumping around as in the early entries. It is therefore reasonable to expect Orphans of Mossflower to be a direct sequel to The Rogue Crew. Without official confirmation, however, readers must still wait for more definite plot details. The publisher has promised to release additional information ahead of the release date.
On another front, efforts to adapt Redwall for the screen have hit a dead end. Patrick McHale, creator of the series Over the Garden Wall, was once tasked with developing a Netflix version, but the project was reported cancelled this year. That failure contrasts with the enthusiasm surrounding the series' return to the literary realm. For the entertainment industry, the Redwall case shows that franchises based on classic books still have a loyal fan base capable of pushing publishers to take the risk of reviving old properties.
In Indonesia itself, Redwall is not an unfamiliar name among young adult fantasy readers, even though its translations are not as complete as the original versions. The arrival of Orphans of Mossflower in 2027 could trigger a wave of nostalgia and encourage local publishers to bring the series back in Indonesian. Moreover, the trend of adapting fantasy for global streaming platforms has made old titles attractive again. The question is whether Redwall will follow the Harry Potter or Narnia phenomenon in terms of retranslation and a broader fan community. The answer will begin to emerge when the 23rd book is officially released.
