Emil Audero, goalkeeper for the Indonesia national team, lifted the lid on the comparison between two Serie A giants, Juventus and Inter Milan, in an exclusive interview with Italian journalist Gianluca Di Marzio. According to him, the Bianconeri hold the edge in individual quality, while the Nerazzurri are superior as a collective unit.
This view stems from Audero's firsthand experience, having trained in the Juventus academy since 2008 and later playing for Inter Milan in the 2023/2024 season. He witnessed for himself how Juventus often relied on individual moments to win matches, while Inter displayed solid and organized collective play.
"Individually, Juventus are superior, but as a team, Inter are better. I remember many Juventus matches won thanks to individual moments. On the other hand, Inter have a team playing style that is truly impressive," Audero said, as quoted from the interview.
Audero also recalled the role of Massimiliano Allegri, the coach who guided him in Turin. He believes Allegri has a special ability to manage players and build personal relationships with quality players. "I was lucky to make my debut with a great Juventus team. Back then, training with them every day felt ordinary to me. Only now do I truly understand the quality of those players," he recalled.
After leaving Juventus, Audero went on to play for Inter Milan. Although he was only a backup to Yann Sommer, he said he felt comfortable in the Nerazzurri dressing room. He even named Nicolo Barella, Federico Dimarco, and Alessandro Bastoni as players he had known since their youth age groups. "I actually wanted to continue, but I felt the situation would not head that way. I was disappointed because I was very happy there, but it was the club's decision," he said.
"Inter play the best football I have ever witnessed. Their strength also lies in the friendship in the dressing room."
On the other hand, Audero revealed that he nearly returned to Juventus last summer. His name was considered by the club alongside several other goalkeepers, but negotiations ultimately fell through. After that, he continued his career with Cremonese before being loaned to Rayo Vallecano. With the Spanish club, Audero made history as the first Indonesian player to appear in LaLiga.
Audero's journey reflects the dynamics of a goalkeeper's career, often moving clubs in search of playing time. His decision to take on the challenge in Spain opened a new path, while also strengthening his position in the Indonesia national team. Experience at two elite Italian clubs is valuable capital, especially in understanding the difference in playing philosophies that emphasize the individual versus the collective.
Going forward, the Indonesian public awaits whether Audero can continue to show his best form at club level and strengthen the national team. With experience in Serie A and LaLiga, he has the potential to become a solid wall under the Garuda crossbar. Will his move to Rayo Vallecano be a stepping stone to a bigger club, or instead mark the end of his European adventure? Only time will tell, but one thing is certain: Audero has proven that this goalkeeper from Mataram can compete on the international stage.
