Daniel Maldini, a name long overshadowed by the legacy of Paolo and Cesare Maldini, is now enjoying his best form with Cagliari. The 25-year-old scored his fourth goal in four consecutive Serie A matches as he helped his team hold Juventus to a 1-1 draw, marking the resurgence of the often-overlooked Sardinian club.
The goal came from a clever piece of individual play: Maldini drove in from the left, fired a shot that deflected off a defender, then combined with Paul Mendy before finishing from close range. His sliding celebration on the grass became a symbol of a player long considered to have failed to live up to his family's lofty expectations.
Behind that performance, however, is Fabio Pisacane, a figure no stranger to life's obstacles. The 40-year-old coach was once paralyzed and in a coma for 20 days due to Guillain-Barrรฉ syndrome as a teenager. He also once served as a whistleblower who reported match-fixing attempts in Serie C. Now, he is building Cagliari with a tactical approach recognized by many, including midfielder Harry Winks.
"I have worked with many great coaches, and Coach Pisacane is clearly at the top level. Since I arrived, he has improved everyone, including me. I am convinced he can reach the pinnacle of this sport," Winks said in an interview.
Pisacane is more than just a motivator. He is known as an architect unafraid to criticize his players, including Maldini, who he says needs to be more consistent. The system he employs gives Maldini the freedom to drift between the wing and the attacking midfield space, a role he rarely got at previous clubs such as Milan, Spezia, Empoli, Monza, Atalanta, and Lazio.
Maldini's story is not just about delayed talent. He has often been labeled "un raccomandato" โ someone who got opportunities because of his family's famous name. That criticism is not entirely wrong: he did come through the Milan academy and made his debut in 2020, but he never truly shone at San Siro. At Cagliari, however, he found an environment that believes in him.
Pisacane has also managed to get the most out of other young players. Romano, 20, who chose to represent Italy after playing for Swiss youth teams, has developed into a dynamic box-to-box midfielder. Mendy, 19, is growing into an increasingly confident target man. Goalkeeper Elia Caprile was outstanding with a series of important saves against Juventus, including stopping a close-range volley from Randal Kolo Muani.
The draw against Juventus was marred by red cards for Pisacane and Luciano Spalletti after the final whistle. The two were involved in an unclear altercation, though Spalletti later claimed he was only praising Cagliari's cleverness in time-wasting. Pisacane himself looked confused, heard asking, "What did I do?"
Beyond the drama, the more relevant question is: what has Pisacane done for Cagliari? He has led the club to six wins and one draw in their last eight matches, trailing only Roma in points over the same period. This is a promising foundation for a team that has finished in the top half of Serie A only once in the last 30 years.
Looking ahead, the biggest challenge is maintaining consistency. Serie A is still long, and Cagliari will face pressure from big teams that are starting to take notice. If Maldini and his teammates can sustain their form, it is not impossible they could repeat a surprise like Leicester City in the 2016 Premier League. But can Pisacane keep drawing the best out of his players, or is this just a flash before injuries and a packed schedule hit? Time will tell, but for now, Cagliari deserves attention.
