Three Gerindra Legislators in East Java Arrested at Ecstasy Party in Surabaya Hotel

The Narcotics Investigation Unit of the Surabaya City Police arrested three members of the Regional People's Representative Council (DPRD) from the Gerindra Party faction in a raid on a hotel room in the Ketintang area of Surabaya. The three were detained along with five other people while allegedly consuming ecstasy.
The three legislators come from different electoral districts in East Java: a member of the Malang Regency DPRD identified by the initial U, a member of the Banyuwangi DPRD identified by the initial A, and a member of the Situbondo DPRD identified by the initial Ar. They were arrested along with five civilians identified by the initials F, K, N, Ro, and R.
The Head of Public Relations at the Surabaya City Police, AKP Hadi Ismanto, confirmed the arrests. According to him, officers found the suspects under the influence of drugs during the raid. "In a condition of using drugs," Hadi said on Wednesday (30/9).
The raid began with a report from residents who suspected drug abuse in the hotel room. Upon arriving at the location, officers found eight people inside the room. Hadi confirmed there was no activity other than drug consumption, and all suspects were fully clothed. "Yes, they were all still fully clothed," he said.
Police immediately conducted urine tests on the eight people. The results showed seven people tested positive for ecstasy, while one person identified by the initial N was found to have consumed two types of drugs at once, namely methamphetamine and ecstasy. "Of the seven people, they tested positive for using ecstasy, while the one with the initial N consumed methamphetamine and ecstasy as well," Hadi explained.
To investigators, the suspects admitted that the drug party was the first time they had done it together in Surabaya. Currently, all eight people have been moved from the Surabaya City Police to the Surabaya City National Narcotics Agency (BNN) for further examination and assessment.
Police have not yet decided whether the suspects will immediately undergo rehabilitation. According to Hadi, the decision awaits a recommendation from the Integrated Assessment Team (TAT). "It is carried out according to procedure, through the TAT. Of course, we will wait for the results from the integrated assessment team," he said.
"If proven, they will certainly be dismissed and an inter-time replacement (PAW) will be carried out if the person concerned serves as a council member. However, we also uphold the presumption of innocence. We await the announcement or investigation from the police."

Separately, the Secretary of the East Java Gerindra Regional Executive Board, Kharisma Febriansyah, responded to the arrest of three of its cadres. He stressed that the party would impose strict sanctions if the three were proven legally guilty. However, he also emphasized the importance of the presumption of innocence and waiting for the results of the police investigation.
This case adds to the long list of legislators who have been caught up in narcotics cases. The public awaits consistency in law enforcement and the party's commitment to maintaining the integrity of its cadres. If proven guilty, the three legislators face losing their seats through the inter-time replacement (PAW) mechanism.
A transparent and accountable legal process is key to restoring public trust in the legislative institution. Will political parties act firmly without discrimination, or will the presumption of innocence become a shield? Time will tell.
