For new players, the Pokémon Trading Card Game (TCG) may seem complicated with its various different card types. However, there are actually three main categories that form the foundation of every deck: Pokémon, Trainer, and Energy. Understanding the role of each is the key to building a solid strategy and enjoying this long-standing game.
Pokémon cards are the core of the deck, because these are the cards that battle on the field. Every Pokémon starts from a basic form that can be played directly into the arena, either as an Active Pokémon or on the Bench. Some basic Pokémon, such as ex, have high HP and strong attacks, so they are not always weak. Evolution allows a basic Pokémon to develop into a stronger form, provided its evolution card is available and played in the correct order. Some Trainer cards can speed up this evolution process.
When an opponent's Pokémon is successfully Knocked Out, the winning player is entitled to take a Prize Card. The number of Prize Cards obtained varies depending on the type of Pokémon defeated. The player who manages to collect all Prize Cards first wins the match. Therefore, it is important to pay attention to the rule text on each Pokémon card because the Prize Card value can differ.
Trainer cards cover two sub-types: Item and Supporter. Both have similar functions, but with different rules for use. Supporters generally provide big effects and can only be played once per turn, and cannot be played on a player's first turn. Supporter names are often taken from characters in the Pokémon world. Meanwhile, Items can be played as many as desired in one turn, although the effect of a single Item card is usually not as big as a Supporter. There are also ACE SPEC cards, of which only one may exist in a deck, and which are usually Items or Supporters with very strong effects.
Energy cards are the resource that allows Pokémon to attack and retreat. Each turn, a player can only attach one Energy card to an Active or Bench Pokémon, unless there is an effect from a Trainer or a Pokémon ability. Because Energy is limited, players must carefully choose which Pokémon will be given Energy for maximum results. Special Energy cards provide additional benefits, such as reducing damage taken, increasing damage dealt, or counting as two Energy. However, their use is limited to only four copies per deck, unlike Basic Energy which is unlimited.
"Understanding card types and their rules is the first step to mastering the game. With this knowledge, players can make the right decisions during a match," according to guidance from Pokémon Organized Play.
In Indonesia, Pokémon TCG is increasingly popular, especially in communities in major cities such as Jakarta, Surabaya, and Bandung. Local tournaments and card shops often hold events for beginner players. Understanding card types not only helps in gameplay, but also in building a competitive deck. For investors or collectors, certain cards such as ACE SPEC and Special Energy have high resale value because of their rarity.
Going forward, the Pokémon TCG meta continues to develop with the arrival of new cards. Players need to keep learning and adapting to the rules in effect. Are you ready to build your dream deck and compete in local tournaments?
