Sugababes have confirmed their return to the music industry by announcing a self-titled album scheduled for release early next year. It is the second album released under their original name and original lineup since One Touch in 2000, marking a new chapter for the trio of Mutya Buena, Keisha Buchanan, and Siobhán Donaghy after years of internal conflict and legal disputes.
The road to this point was not smooth. Keisha Buchanan revealed that she had to face "several giants" to regain the rights to the Sugababes name. In an interview with British Vogue, she described the process as a long, convoluted, and costly fight. "I had the rights to the name from an old contract, but there were a lot of complicated things happening behind the scenes. Essentially, I had to fight several major parties to make it happen. It wasn't easy, there were a lot of financial consequences," she said.
Even so, the trio's spirit has not faded. Mutya Buena believes time has not diminished their energy. "I still feel quite young. It doesn't feel like it's been that long. I feel fresh being able to keep performing with new material and gigging with them," she said with a laugh. The album contains 12 tracks exploring the influences of UK garage, trip-hop, heavily distorted dance-pop, and the distinctive London touch that has long been their identity.
The lead single, titled Ghost, was released on 24 September. Siobhán Donaghy revealed that the song was inspired by her personal experience with first love. "He just disappeared before we had a term for it. There's a particular strangeness in grieving for someone who is still out there," she said.
Sugababes' return to the big stage was proven when their appearances at Glastonbury 2022 and 2024 forced security to close the area because of the sheer number of fans present. Siobhán called the moment proof that the band's journey is a triumph. "Seeing what happened to our band and how we could come back together is an achievement," she reflected.
Keisha added that age is no barrier to starting over. "At any age, at any point, you can start again. You can rise from any situation," she asserted. The album follows The Lost Tapes (2022), which was originally planned for release under the name MKS while the name battle was ongoing.
The history of Sugababes' lineup is indeed full of dynamics. Siobhán left in 2002 and was replaced by Heidi Range. Mutya left in 2005 and later spoke about postpartum depression, with her position filled by Amelle Berrabah. Keisha stayed until 2009 before eventually leaving, and Jade Ewen completed the lineup at the time. The founders then reunited around 2011 as MKS, starting a long legal battle that ultimately returned the Sugababes name to them.
For fans in Indonesia, Sugababes' return could be a breath of fresh air amid the dominance of contemporary Korean and Western pop. The group has a loyal fan base that grew up with the 2000s era, and the potential for an Asian tour could be an opportunity. However, challenges remain: can this album break into the global streaming market dominated by young artists? The answer will become clear after the release and the promotional strategy they carry out.
