Actress Lili Reinhart revealed that Keira Knightley played a big role in her decision to become an actress. In an interview with Interview magazine, Reinhart recalled her childhood when she was captivated by Knightley's performances in films such as Pride and Prejudice and Atonement. "Everything she did, I watched when I was 11, 12, and fell in love with the idea of being an actor," she said.
Reinhart, now 30, admitted that her obsession with Knightleyโnow 41โbecame the early trigger for her ambition in acting. She hopes to one day be involved in a project as big as the films starring her idol. "It'll happen eventually. Hopefully," she added.
Currently, Reinhart returns to the romantic comedy genre through the film The Love Hypothesis, an adaptation of Ali Hazelwood's 2021 novel. She explained her reason for taking the role, especially because Hazelwood is known for writing many books about women in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics). "It's cool because the rom-coms that used to be sent to me always featured women with the same jobs. I was sick of it. Women can do more than those three things," she asserted.
Reinhart said she first read The Love Hypothesis while at the Venice Film Festival. She admitted she was impressed by the story even though she usually does not read romance books. "I love Ali's books. I was in Venice for the film festival, so I had a beautiful romantic backdrop while reading it. I don't read romance books, but I really enjoyed it and surprised myself," she told The Hollywood Reporter.
Previously, Reinhart was reluctant to star in another romcom. However, the experience of filming Look Both Ways in 2021 changed her mind. "I hadn't done a rom-com in a few years, but I had the best time filming Look Both Ways, and it felt like I was ready to do it again. Because I loved the book, the character dynamics, and the slow pace, I was confident about taking this project," she explained.
Reinhart also expressed her interest in starring in more romcom films in the coming years. She likes the type of man like Mr. Darcy who is full of longing and relationships that develop slowly. "I enjoy the longing Mr. Darcy figure and the slow burn between them. I love the satisfaction of slow build-up and romantic tension, which is why I'm now very interested in doing more romance after filming this movie," she said.
For the Indonesian entertainment industry, Reinhart's statement could be a mirror that young actresses also crave more varied roles, not trapped in gender stereotypes. In the country, a similar phenomenon is seen when several actresses begin choosing projects that raise issues of women and science, though still limited. This opens opportunities for production houses to explore more diverse stories, in line with an increasingly mature market demand.
Going forward, will Reinhart truly remain consistent in the romcom genre, or will she return to heavier dramatic roles? The public awaits her next move, especially after The Love Hypothesis is released. What is clear is that her dedication to stories that give women room to appear fully deserves appreciation.
