Marvel Studios has confirmed a theatrical re-release of Avengers: Endgame under the title Avengers: Endgame Encore, featuring additional footage and a number of surprises said to have never been seen by audiences before. The move comes nearly seven years after the film closed out the Infinity saga and a few months before Avengers: Doomsday is scheduled to open.
In a statement quoted from People, director Anthony Russo said that viewers who already saw Endgame in 2019 will still be surprised by the new material. "If you watched Endgame when it first came out, you would not expect this to happen," he said. Joe Russo added that the release is also meant to bring back the collective experience of watching in a theater, complete with the cheers and emotions that accompany the key moments.
The length of the additional footage is not uniform. According to a GamesRadar report, standard screenings include about two minutes of new material, while screenings in Disney's new premium format, Infinity Vision, offer a total of about five minutes. Deadline reported that Infinity Vision audiences will also get an exclusive introduction and a special closing scene. This difference could push hardcore fans to choose the expensive format tickets in order to get the full experience.
The connection between Encore and Doomsday is not merely a marketing strategy. Joe Russo called the release "an important companion story" and revealed that the new footage is set against the narrative backdrop of Doomsday. The most obvious clue appears in the post-credits scene: the sound of a metal hammer identical to the sound heard when Tony Stark builds his first Iron Man suit. In the context of the story, that sound signals that Doctor Doom is forging his maskโa parallel that ties together two characters both played by Robert Downey Jr.
For the global film industry, Marvel's move reinforces the trend of the event re-release as a bridge between franchises. The studio is not just selling nostalgia, but also building expectations for the next release. This kind of strategy is often used to test market response before the main film opens, while also adding revenue from additional ticket sales. On the other hand, audiences are faced with a choice of formats that splits the viewing experience, a practice that is increasingly common in the premium large format era.
The impact on the Indonesian market bears watching. National cinema chains usually follow the global schedule for Marvel films, so the chance of Encore screenings in major cities is fairly open. However, the availability of the Infinity Vision format in Indonesia is not necessarily evenly distributed, as it depends on technological readiness and cooperation with Disney. For creative industry players and investors in the entertainment sector, this phenomenon shows that big franchise content is still the main magnet for drawing audiences to theaters, while also underscoring the importance of investment in premium screens and state-of-the-art sound systems.
"This re-release is not just repeating the past, but becoming a narrative bridge to a new chapter," said Joe Russo, as quoted by Fandango.
The remaining question: will Indonesian audiences get access equal to other markets, or will they end up as second-class viewers in Marvel's global strategy? The answer will become clear from the schedule configurations and ticket prices set by cinema chains in the coming months.
