Prominent film producer Harvey Weinstein was sentenced to 15 years in prison by a New York court on Tuesday (15/7/2025) after being found guilty of sexual assault against Miriam Haley, a production assistant. The verdict was the result of a retrial after the previous ruling was overturned by the New York Court of Appeals on grounds of unfairness.
Weinstein, 74, had previously served a 23-year prison sentence for a similar case, but that ruling was annulled in 2024. In the retrial held in June 2025, he was again found guilty of assaulting Haley, which occurred at his apartment in New York City in 2006. Meanwhile, the rape charge involving Jessica Mann was not pursued after the third trial ended in a deadlock.
Judge Curtis Farber stated during the proceedings that Weinstein's career achievements would mean nothing compared to his actions. He called Weinstein a 'sexual predator' and 'the literal face of the MeToo movement'. Haley, who also gave testimony, described her suffering as a 'life sentence' and said her decision to speak out would keep her constantly vigilant.
In his statement in court, Weinstein expressed regret for Haley's suffering but continued to deny committing any crime. 'I regret the pain of Miriam Haley, but I must reiterate that I am not guilty,' he said. Haley, who previously worked as a production assistant, said she was relieved by the verdict and hoped it could serve as an example for other victims to speak out.
"I just thought, I have to stand up for myself. I have to stand up for the truth," Haley told the BBC.
The Weinstein case has become a symbol of the struggle against sexual violence in the entertainment industry. Since the first allegations emerged in 2017, dozens of women have spoken out about similar experiences, triggering a global movement demanding accountability. In Indonesia, this case can serve as a mirror of the importance of legal protection for victims of sexual violence, especially in creative work environments that are often vulnerable to abuse of power.
Although this verdict provides justice for Haley, Weinstein's long journey is not over. He still has to serve his sentence in Los Angeles and possibly face an appeal. The public is also wondering whether this case will drive systemic change in Hollywood and other entertainment industries. What is clear is that victims' voices are becoming increasingly difficult to silence.
