- Malaysia dijadwalkan memulai turnamen melawan Bangladesh, lalu bersua Indonesia tiga hari kemudian.

The International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) has granted the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) request to register Brad Tapp as a heritage player. The decision paves the way for the 25-year-old defender to strengthen the Malaysian national team at the FIFA ASEAN Cup 2026.
The green light from FIFA confirms that Tapp meets all regulatory requirements as a heritage player. Verified official documents state that he was born in Sydney, Australia, but has Malaysian blood from his mother, who is from Penang. This status also ends speculation about the validity of his background.
FIFA's move not only affects Tapp but also accelerates the naturalization process for other players within FAM. JDT striker Bergson da Silva is undergoing a similar process, while Tapp's teammate Manuel Hidalgo received FIFA's approval earlier on 16 September. This indicates FAM is serious about building a competitive squad ahead of the regional tournament.
For Malaysia's interim coach, Tan Cheng Hoe, Tapp's presence provides tactical flexibility. He can be deployed as a center-back alongside Dion Cools, Harith Haiqal, or Ubaidullah Shamsul. Tapp's ability to operate as a defensive midfielder is also an added value, especially when the team needs balance between defense and attack.
This FIFA decision is a blow to the Indonesian national team, which is in the same group. Malaysia's back line, previously considered porous, could now be more solid. The meeting between the two teams on 28 September will be an early test of the effectiveness of Malaysia's additional ammunition.
"With complete documents and FIFA's approval, Tapp has a great chance of making his official debut at the ASEAN Cup 2026," said an official FAM statement as quoted by Malaysian media.
From Indonesia's perspective, Tapp's approval underscores the trend of heritage players in Southeast Asia. Malaysia, like Indonesia, is using FIFA regulations to strengthen the national team instantly. This requires PSSI and the Indonesian national team coach to keep monitoring the movements of opposing players, especially in the defense sector, which has now gained experienced reinforcements from the Australian league.
Tapp's presence also raises questions about the balance between local and heritage players in the Harimau Malaya squad. Nevertheless, FAM insists the process follows the rules and aims to boost the competitiveness of Malaysian football on the regional stage.
Facing the packed ASEAN Cup 2026 schedule, Malaysia will rely on Tapp as one of its pillars. If he adapts quickly, he could become a solid wall that troubles opposing strikers, including Indonesia's. Football fans in the country should pay close attention to this development because it directly affects the competition in the group.
The question is, will Tapp start immediately against Indonesia, or will Tan Cheng Hoe choose him as an option from the bench? The answer will be clear within days.
