Borussia Dortmund midfielder Jobe Bellingham has finally received his first call-up to the senior England national team. The 20-year-old is on the 23-man list prepared by coach Thomas Tuchel for next month's UEFA Nations League matches against Croatia and Spain. The decision marks a new milestone in Jobe's career, having previously only represented England at youth levels from U15 to U21.
The call-up is not without reason. This season, Jobe has featured in six of Dortmund's eight Bundesliga matches, helping Niko Kovač's side to five wins and three draws. His consistent form has seen Dortmund match Bayern Munich's points tally at the top of the table. Tuchel acknowledged that Jobe's fine performances in Germany were the main factor behind his decision.
“Lee Carsley (the U21 coach) has spoken very positively about Jobe for weeks. If there is a chance to come in and make an impression with the senior team, he deserves it. He has played some good games and is in top form with Dortmund,” Tuchel said, as quoted on the FA's official website.
Interestingly, Jobe is the younger brother of Jude Bellingham, the Real Madrid star who is also a cornerstone of the England national team. If the two take the field together, they will make history as the first brothers to represent England since Gary and Phil Neville in 2007. The moment is sure to be a draw for English football fans, who have long awaited a Bellingham brothers duo at senior level.
For Jobe, this is a big step in his career. He had captained the England U21 team since September last year and helped The Young Lions qualify for the 2027 U21 European Championship. A chance to play for the senior team will be the real test, given the fierce competition in England's midfield. However, Tuchel is known for daring to give opportunities to young players showing promising form.
Tuchel's decision is also part of England's regeneration strategy. By including Jobe, he signals that the national team door is always open to young players who are consistent at club level. The move aligns with Tuchel's philosophy of building squad depth for future major tournaments. England, after all, has a long tradition of promoting talented young players to the senior team.
On the other hand, Dortmund certainly benefit from the call-up. Jobe's status as a senior international will raise his market value and add motivation for the player to keep developing. Europe's big clubs may become increasingly interested in tracking his progress. However, Dortmund are certain not to let him go any time soon, given his important role in midfield.
The question now: will Jobe actually get minutes against Croatia or Spain? Or will he merely be a squad filler? Either way, this call-up is the start of a long journey for Jobe toward the peak of his career. If he can make the most of the opportunity, it is not impossible that one day we will see him become a cornerstone of the England national team, like his brother, Jude Bellingham.
