A John Cena autographed trading card has officially become the most expensive wrestling card ever sold on the public market. The auction held by Goldin recorded a final price of $329,400, or about Rp5.3 billion (at an assumed exchange rate of Rp16,100), for the 1/1 edition Topps Royalty WWE WrestleMania Patch Autographs card belonging to the WWE legend.
That figure surpasses the previous record for the wrestling card category. The bidding process was tight: the highest bid reached $270,000, but the final price jumped once the buyer's premium was factored in. Goldin announced the sale through its official X account, calling it "the highest public sale of all time for a wrestling card."
The card is no ordinary piece of memorabilia. It contains a patch swatch worn by Cena at WrestleMania 41, complete with an authentic signature, and only one copy was printed. Cena headlined the second night of WrestleMania 41, defeating Cody Rhodes with help from rapper Travis Scott, while also securing his 17th WWE Championship titleโbreaking Ric Flair's record of 16 titles.
This price surge is not merely WWE fan euphoria. The sports card and memorabilia market has seen explosive growth in recent years, driven by millennial and Gen Z investors seeking alternative assets outside stocks and bonds. Basketball and baseball cards had already broken into the millions of dollars, but wrestling cards have only recently drawn serious attention after Topps launched a premium series featuring live-event patches.
In its auction description, Goldin called this card "one of the most iconic and most sought-after in the entire wrestling collecting hobby." It also noted that WrestleMania Patch Autograph cards "have quickly become the most sought-after cards in the hobby."
"I don't look at it as a burden. I look at it as a blessing. Every job has its hurdles. I love what I do and that is the happiness tax for doing it," Cena told Metro in a separate interview, describing the pressure of living under the public spotlight.
For Indonesia, this phenomenon reflects the stirrings of a collecting market that is beginning to shift from a hobby into an investment instrument. The WWE fan community in the country is fairly large, but access to international auctions is still limited by shipping costs, import duties, and payment methods. Even so, e-commerce platforms and social media allow local collectors to monitor price movements in real time, opening opportunities for those who want to explore the global market.
Going forward, the question is no longer whether this record will hold, but who will break it. With more athletes and celebrities releasing limited-edition cards, and major auction houses entering the wrestling memorabilia space, the value of such assets has the potential to keep soaring. Is the Indonesian market ready to be a player, or just a spectator?
