Manchester United face a tricky situation after one of their brightest academy prospects, JJ Gabriel, expressed a desire to end the partnership early. The 15-year-old has filed a registration cancellation request with club management, sparking fears of losing a future asset for nothing.
The decision came to light after Gabriel missed a training session with Michael Carrick's squad this week. He had been scheduled to feature in the Carabao Cup match against Brighton. Club insiders say there has been a rift between Gabriel's family and management, though the exact cause remains unclear.
CEO Omar Berrada and Football Director Jason Wilcox are reported to have taken personal charge of the case. The move was made because United have long been known to rely heavily on academy products as the foundation of the club's identity. Gabriel has even been touted as a potential breaker of David Gaskell's record as the youngest player ever to represent the first team, after scoring a hat-trick on his debut in the UEFA Youth League last week.
Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, via his YouTube channel, revealed that United's management are still trying to persuade Gabriel to stay. However, Romano rates the club's chances of keeping the player as very slim. "If you ask about the probability, the situation is difficult for Man United, definitely less than 50 percent that they can change the situation and keep the player," he said.
"On one hand, United are trying to reach an agreement with JJ and keep one of the best talents in the world. On the other hand, JJ Gabriel wants to leave and is considering various opportunities," Romano said.
A number of elite European clubs are reported to be making their move. Chelsea became the first Premier League club to be linked with Gabriel. Real Madrid, long known for monitoring young players for their Castilla academy, are said to fit their recruitment philosophy. Bayern Munich have even contacted Gabriel's representatives, while Barcelona and several other Bundesliga clubs are also reported to be interested.
If the registration cancellation request is accepted, Gabriel will be free to sign a contract with any club after his 16th birthday. United do have the option to reject the request, but the window to find a solution is very narrow. If they fail, the club will only receive FIFA training compensation, an amount that does not match the market value of a player of Gabriel's caliber.
The case is reminiscent of Paul Pogba's departure in 2012. At the time, a young Pogba chose to leave for Juventus rather than extend his contract, a decision that ultimately forced United to pay a record ยฃ89 million transfer fee to bring him back four years later. The Old Trafford management clearly do not want to repeat that dark history.
For football fans in Indonesia, this saga mirrors how vulnerable big clubs are when it comes to keeping young talent amid the onslaught of European clubs offering more promising projects and wages. Clubs in Indonesia that are starting to take youth development seriously can take a lesson about the importance of maintaining communication and the welfare of players' families, rather than relying solely on contractual ties.
Looking ahead, will United be able to convince Gabriel and his family that his best future lies at Old Trafford? Or will it be the opposite, with him becoming the latest name on a long list of talents who leave the club for opportunities elsewhere?
