Liverpool are set to visit Bournemouth this weekend, and for Andoni Iraola, the match will be both an emotional moment and a tactical test. It marks his first return to the club he left last summer, and he admits that facing the Cherries won't be easy, as they are intimately familiar with his playing system.
During his pre-match press conference, Iraola revealed he had spoken with Bournemouth's new manager, Marco Rose, over the summer. "It will be a complicated match because they clearly know very well what we are trying to do, both with and without the ball. But I also have an advantage โ I know their strengths and weaknesses," he stated. He also confessed he would feel "strange" facing the club he supported when they played Real Sociedad in the Europa League last Thursday.
Beyond discussing the upcoming match, Iraola took the opportunity to praise Ronald Araujo. The Uruguayan defender is lauded for his exceptional physical endurance and willingness to play various positions since arriving at Anfield. "I think he needed a change like this. He came humbly, from a big club, an experienced player," Iraola commented. "We need him at right-back, at center-back, and if necessary, in other positions, I think he's ready."
This praise comes as a breath of fresh air for Liverpool fans, who have long worried about squad depth on the right side of defence following Trent Alexander-Arnold's departure, a concern further exacerbated by Mohamed Salah's exit a year later. Araujo's ability to cover the right flank offers a short-term solution, but Iraola appears to have already identified a long-term successor for Salah's attacking prowess, and it's not an expensive summer signing.
Rio Ngumoha received particular praise from Iraola, who highlighted the young player's response after a tough start against Tottenham as evidence of his growing maturity, especially given he was playing on the right side, which isn't his preferred position. "Against Spurs, maybe he didn't start the game well, but I like how he bounced back," Iraola stated. "He lost some duels early on. Udogie is a very strong player. But after that, he did his job. For the first two goals, he was involved. Everything came from one-on-one situations, and he made good decisions."
He added that Ngumoha still needs to adapt to the Premier League's rhythm due to his very young age, but his quality is already evident. "He has the quality to be involved in such games, and I particularly like his attitude, because he's not like: 'I prefer to play here.' He's ready to do what we need. I'm also very happy that he was called up to the national team."
Ngumoha's call-up to the England squad serves as proof that his talent is recognized at an international level. Coach Thomas Tuchel will oversee four Nations League matches in 11 days, with the Czech Republic being an opponent twice, making rotation key. The 18-year-old is almost certain to get an opportunity to showcase his abilities.
For Liverpool, Ngumoha's emergence as an attacking option offers new hope. Salah's departure left a significant void on the right flank, but if Ngumoha continues to develop, he could become a long-term solution without the need for substantial expenditure. However, it's still too early to place a heavy burden on his shoulders. The question remains: will Iraola dare to give him regular Premier League minutes, or will he remain a backup until he is truly mature?
