The government has officially set 26 national holidays and joint leave days for 2027 through a Joint Decree (SKB) issued by three ministers. The decision provides schedule certainty for the public and businesses in planning activities throughout the year, and serves as a positive signal for the tourism and creative economy sectors, which have long relied on long-holiday momentum.
The decree, signed under Number 1205 of 2026, Number 3 of 2026, and Number 2 of 2026, details key dates, including religious holidays and national holidays. One of the most prominent periods is the holiday cluster in March 2027, when Idulfitri 1448 Hijriah falls on 10-11 March, close to joint leave days on 9, 12, and 15 March. This combination creates a run of holidays that could become one of the year's peaks in public mobility.
Compared with previous years, the distribution of holidays in 2027 is relatively more even. Besides March, there is also a long holiday in May 2027 combining Labour Day, the Ascension of Jesus Christ, Iduladha, and Waisak. The government appears to be trying to maintain a balance between spiritual needs, workers' rest, and economic stimulation through the services sector.
For tourism industry players, this certainty is a breath of fresh air. Hotel operators, airlines, and travel agents can prepare tour packages well in advance, including dynamic pricing strategies to anticipate a surge in demand. Regional governments are also expected to be quick to prepare infrastructure and promotion, especially in destinations that have long been favourites during long holidays such as Bali, Yogyakarta, and Labuan Bajo.
"With a total of 26 holidays, people have more room to arrange annual leave. This is an opportunity for the tourism sector to create attractive programmes," said a Ministry of Tourism official in a separate statement.
Even so, challenges remain. Traffic congestion, soaring ticket prices, and limited accommodation capacity are often annual complaints. Cross-sector coordination is needed so that the holiday momentum does not instead cause gridlock and inconvenience. In addition, informal workers and the retail sector need attention so that they too feel the positive impact of increased consumption.
From the employment side, this decree provides guidance for companies in arranging operational schedules. Although joint leave is optional depending on each company's policy, its existence is often followed by the majority of corporations. Workers are urged to apply for annual leave earlier, especially for periods adjacent to weekends, so they can enjoy longer holidays.
Going forward, the government is expected not only to set dates but also to oversee their implementation on the ground. Socialisation regarding leave rights and worker protection during long holidays is crucial. With careful planning, the 26 holidays in 2027 are not merely a number, but capital for a more inclusive economic recovery.
