Werder Bremen have surprised the Bundesliga this season by sitting fifth after eight matches, collecting 15 points and suffering just one defeat. This impressive start signals a revival for the club nicknamed Die Grün-Weißen, who struggled near the bottom of the table last season. Austrian winger Marco Grüll revealed that the foundation of their success lies in squad cohesion and the quick integration of new players.
In an exclusive interview with the Bundesliga, Grüll stressed that his team has quality across the board. “The main reason is clear: we have a great team. Every week everyone gives everything, we play with intensity, we fight, and we produce entertaining football,” he said. He also highlighted the role of striker Niclas Füllkrug, who arrived in the summer and immediately became a goal machine. “We can't ignore Fülle's presence—he is very important to us,” Grüll added.
The arrival of nine new players such as Arthur, Youri Regeer, Ludovit Reis, Chuki, and Eren Dinkçi has, according to Grüll, significantly raised the team's level. “All the new players have performed very well and have certainly raised our quality,” he said. Cohesion was key when Bremen faced difficult situations, including a dramatic comeback from 2-0 down in Dortmund to earn a point. “That shows the mentality and character of this team,” Grüll stressed.
Grüll himself has undergone a transformation in form. Last season was considered underwhelming, but now he is back in his favored position on the left wing. “I found my rhythm because I almost always play on the left. That helps me create chances,” he explained. He admitted last season was a difficult period, but he did not give up and kept working hard. “Now everything is going well, but this is only the beginning. I have to stay consistent,” he said.
“We inspire each other through our intensity and the way we play without the ball. When I see Fülle running hard, it spurs me on, and vice versa. We really push each other,” Grüll said of his partnership with Füllkrug.
The Grüll-Füllkrug partnership recalls the successful Füllkrug-Marvin Ducksch duo of a few seasons ago. Nevertheless, Grüll is reluctant to be compared directly. “That comparison may be excessive. They performed brilliantly over the long term. Right now we are also doing well, but the whole team deserves the praise,” he explained. He emphasized the role of midfielders who rarely record assists but control the game.
Ahead of the Nordderby against Hamburg after the international break, Grüll acknowledged that the derby atmosphere is always special. “There is nothing better for a footballer than playing in a full stadium with both sets of supporters giving 150 percent support. The derby is the best match,” he said. He also feels the rivalry on the pitch through tackles and taunts, which he considers normal in football.
With positive momentum, Werder Bremen have the potential to finish the season in the European places. But Grüll remains humble. “I don't want to predict too far ahead because momentum can change quickly. If we keep working hard, we can win more. But we must not let our guard down at all,” he concluded. The big question: can Bremen maintain their consistency until the end of the season, or is this just an early illusion?
