Marquez Wary of Martin at Sepang: 'Adrenaline Is the Best Painkiller'

Marc Marquez is not about to be lulled by Jorge Martin's physical condition. Even though his main rival in the MotoGP standings has just suffered a broken wrist from a hard crash in the Australian sprint last week, the Ducati rider still regards Martin as a serious threat at the Malaysian round at Sepang Circuit this weekend.
Martin, who rides for Aprilia, has been declared fit after a medical examination to take part in Friday's first free practice session. However, many observers expect his performance to be affected. Marquez rejects that assumption. He points to the stricter medical fitness procedures in place since he himself suffered a serious injury from returning to the track too soon after the incident at Jerez in 2020.
"I trust the new protocol after the Jerez injury: if they declare him fit, it means he really is capable of racing. And if he is capable, he will perform at a very high level because adrenaline is the best painkiller," Marquez said, as quoted by Motorsport.com.
That statement is not mere pleasantry. Marquez, now 33 years old, says he does not merely believe Martin will be fast, but is fully convinced. "I won't change my approach, but I will push to the maximum limit," he added in Spanish.
Marquez's confidence is well founded. At Phillip Island, Martin was actually faster than him but crashed during a tight duel. Earlier, in the Indonesian sprint, Martin also had superior speed but made a mistake while trying to reclaim the top position after briefly yielding to Marquez over tyre pressure concerns. Those two incidents dealt a psychological blow to the 2024 world champion.
For Marquez, Martin's presence on the track actually benefits the title fight. "Of course it's better for the championship hunt if Jorge is here. I'm happy to see him racing," he said. The statement reflects a desire to deliver a fierce duel in front of the fans while preserving the prestige of the competition.
Even so, Marquez remains cautious. He is aware that Martin, known for his raw speed, can bounce back at any moment. Moreover, Sepang is a circuit that demands physical strength, especially on an injured wrist. If Martin can overcome the pain, the duel in Malaysia could become one of the most thrilling chapters of the season.
The question is, can Martin withstand the psychological pressure after twice faltering while in the lead? Or will Marquez once again demonstrate his mental dominance? The answer will be seen on the Sepang track, where adrenaline is truly put to the test.
