Prime Video's epic series The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power will enter a new chapter in its third season with a soft reboot via a five-year time jump after the events of season two. The decision was announced directly by co-showrunner Patrick McKay in an exclusive interview with IGN from the set. McKay stressed that the third season will mark the start of a "completely new story", giving viewers who have not followed the previous two seasons a chance to start without baggage.
Big time jumps are nothing new in television. McKay and co-showrunner J.D. Payne said they were inspired by similar approaches in Battlestar Galactica and Halt and Catch Fire. "We really loved the idea of putting the audience in a position that feels completely fresh," he said. The strategy is seen as effective for expanding the viewer base amid increasingly tight competition among streaming services.
Narratively, season two ended with the reveal of Sauron's identity as Middle-earth's new Dark Lord. After killing Adar—an original character created for the series—Sauron rallied his forces and pushed back the elves. Now, season three will center on the forging of the One Ring, the ultimate weapon Sauron has not yet created. McKay promised a more massive scale of battle, with the possible joining of Numenor and the dwarves to the side of the surviving elves.
Nevertheless, the soft reboot approach has drawn mixed reactions. Some devoted Tolkien fans worry the series is drifting further from the original work. From the start, The Rings of Power has taken many creative liberties, including creating characters such as Adar who do not appear in Tolkien's writings. McKay defended the move on the grounds that Middle-earth's Second Age—the story's setting—is not described in detail by Tolkien, leaving room for original characters. "There's a lot of room for original characters in this mythological era," he said.
For the Indonesian market, the series has a fairly large fan base, especially among fantasy enthusiasts and loyal followers of the The Lord of the Rings franchise. The arrival of a third season with a more self-contained story could draw back viewers who had stepped away because of the complexity of the first and second seasons' plots. Prime Video itself is active in Indonesia, though its penetration still lags behind other local and global streaming services. This soft reboot moment could be an opportunity for Prime Video to boost new subscriber numbers in the country, alongside growing interest in quality fantasy content.
"Our goal for season three is to blow the doors off their hinges. We're proud of seasons one and two, but now we're starting a completely new story. This is a turning point for the series." — Patrick McKay, co-showrunner
With a release schedule split into three waves—four premiere episodes on 11 November, two more episodes on 18 November, and the final two episodes on 25 November—Prime Video appears to want to sustain discussion momentum on social media. The strategy also gives new viewers room to catch up without pressure. The question is whether this soft reboot can win over both old and new fans at once, or whether it will widen the gap between expectation and reality. We will find out in a matter of months.
