Niclas Füllkrug has proven his sharpness once more. The two goals he scored against Paderborn in the sixth matchweek not only saved Werder Bremen from defeat but also lifted him to the top of the Bundesliga scoring charts for the 2026/27 season.
For the 33-year-old, this impressive form marks a kind of revival after a difficult spell at West Ham United and AC Milan. Now, in his second stint with Bremen, Füllkrug is rediscovering his best touch. In six matches, he has already matched his best tally since the 2023/24 season, when he scored 12 goals for Borussia Dortmund. With this kind of consistency, it is not out of the question that he will keep adding to his goal count until the end of the season.
The match against Paderborn was a perfect example of how crucial Füllkrug's role is. Trailing by two goals at half-time, Bremen fought back in the second half thanks to the striker's quick brace. The 2-2 draw kept the team nicknamed the Green-Whites in eighth place, just one point off the top six.
Interestingly, the comeback against Paderborn was not Bremen's first this season. They had also trailed by two goals against Augsburg before winning 3-2, and against Dortmund before eventually equalizing. In fact, the match against Paderborn set a new Bundesliga record: for the first time, a team earned points after trailing by two goals in three consecutive matches.
Füllkrug's record at Bremen is hardly new. In the 2022/23 season, he shared the top scorer title with Christopher Nkunku on 16 goals, which earned him a place in Germany's squad for the 2022 World Cup. Since his debut against Oman, he has scored 14 goals in 24 caps. With Jürgen Klopp now in charge of the German national team, Füllkrug's strong form gives him a good chance of returning to the fold of Der Panzer.
"He fires up the team, he drives the team forward. He is an example in everything he does, both on and off the pitch. He is a jackpot for us as a club and a team. He leads by example," said Werder Bremen coach Daniel Thioune.
Thioune's praise underlines how valuable Füllkrug is to Bremen. Yet the real challenge still lies ahead. In the seventh matchweek, Bremen will travel to Mainz with a mission to extend their positive run. If Füllkrug keeps scoring, not only could Bremen's position in the upper reaches of the table change, but his chances of representing Germany again under Klopp will also open up wider.
