Jason Sudeikis has finally spoken out about the end of his relationship with Olivia Wilde. In a recent interview, the actor known for the series Ted Lasso called communication the weak point that caused their relationship to fail. He admitted he regretted not being more open in sharing his feelings with Wilde during nearly a decade together.
The two began dating in 2011 and got engaged before separating in 2020. From that relationship, they have two children: Otis (12) and Daisy (10). Sudeikis said he often bottled up his feelings and was reluctant to voice his concerns, a habit he said only made things worse. "I should have been better at communicating what I was feeling," he said on the podcast Talk Easy with Sam Fragoso, as quoted by Bang Premier.
The 51-year-old highlighted the importance of openness in a relationship. He considered it unfair to assume a partner can read minds. "If I feel something but don't talk about it, it won't just go away," he added. Sudeikis also likened this communication pattern to interactions at work, for example with a boss or a television producer. For him, the ability to convey ideas quickly and clearly is a skill that must be continually honed.
Although the relationship is over, Sudeikis still expressed appreciation for Wilde. He called his former fiancรฉe highly professional in her work as a director. "I'm happy for her, and I feel lucky to be able to do what I love," he said. He also admitted the bitter experience helped him become more sensitive to others facing similar situations.
As for his love life, Sudeikis said he is not ready for a serious relationship. He said he is uncomfortable approaching many people at once, especially as a father of two. "I like connecting with other people, but right now it feels heavy and confusing," he said on the podcast Friends Keep Secrets. He stressed that his children will always be the top priority, even before himself. "Whoever I date later will never be number one, because the children come first," he said.
Sudeikis's admission is not just a celebrity confession. In Indonesia, the issue of communication in marriage is also a public concern. Many couples struggle to express their feelings openly, which leads to prolonged conflict. This phenomenon is relevant to the rising number of divorce cases in the country, which are often triggered by communication problems. Nevertheless, Sudeikis and Wilde show that a relationship that ends does not have to turn into enmity, especially for the sake of the children.
Going forward, the public will surely be waiting to see whether Sudeikis will truly open his heart again. But most importantly, he has learned that emotional honesty is key. As Sudeikis put it, "I have to make sure my cup is full so it can overflow to others." A reminder that taking care of yourself is also important before building a relationship with someone else.
