Leeds United have once again set their sights on Igor Paixao, the Marseille winger who has long been on their wanted list. The opportunity arises not because of the player's fine form, but because Marseille are reported to be facing financial difficulties that could force them to sell valuable assets in the upcoming transfer window.
According to a Football Insider report, the Elland Road hierarchy have made Paixao a primary target to add firepower to their forward line. The market value of the Brazilian player is estimated at 40 million pounds, though that figure is seen as flexible given the financial condition of the Ligue 1 club. Leeds are not alone; a number of other unnamed Premier League clubs are also monitoring the negotiations.
Leeds' interest is nothing new. Since several transfer windows ago, Paixao has been a name linked with a move to England. However, the situation at Marseille now adds a different dimension: the club based at the Stade Velodrome are reported to need to balance their books, making high-value players like Paixao prime candidates to be let go.
Even so, the path to an agreement is not smooth. Transfer journalist Pete O'Rourke believes a January transfer is unlikely to materialize. "I don't see that happening in January because Marseille won't want to lose a key player mid-season, and the asking price is probably still too high," he said, as quoted by Football Insider.
A similar view comes from the Marseille camp. Coach Bruno Genesio in August praised Paixao as a key figure in the team's setup. "Igor is a remarkable person and a very good player. He enjoys training and matches. He is also carrying on the momentum from last season. Since the start of this season, he has been involved in many dangerous chances and goals; for us, he is a very important asset," Genesio said.
On the other hand, Leeds' need to add sharpness is pressing. Although Dominic Calvert-Lewin has been impressive and has earned praise from manager Daniel Farke, the team's overall productivity remains under scrutiny. Of their Premier League matches this season, Leeds have scored more than one goal only once, when they thrashed Newcastle 4-1. The club's owner, 49ers Enterprises, are said to want to inject more firepower into the attack.
"Dominic is like a fine wine, getting better with age. Physically he is at the top level and his speed is more than enough. He is a very complete striker," Farke said of Calvert-Lewin.
For Leeds, signing Paixao could be a strategic move to capitalize on Marseille's situation. However, they must compete with other clubs and convince the player that Elland Road is the right place to continue his career. With a price that could fall, the opportunity is open, but timing of execution will be key.
Looking ahead, the question is how much financial pressure Marseille will face before the January window arrives. If their condition worsens, the door for Paixao to leave could open sooner. Conversely, if Marseille can hold out until the end of the season, Leeds may have to wait and compete with more suitors in the next transfer window.
