Liverpool took three points from their trip to Brentford with a 2-1 score, but the win came at a high price. Two key players, Dominik Szoboszlai and Jeremie Frimpong, had to leave the pitch early due to injury, raising fresh concerns for the medical staff and coach Andoni Iraola.
Szoboszlai, who had previously missed the last two matches due to a hamstring problem, felt the same issue again. The Hungarian midfielder managed only 32 minutes before being substituted. Iraola stressed that the injury was not a new one, but a recurrence of an old condition that had not fully healed.
"Dom felt the same injury. It is not a new injury and probably not recovered enough, so we need more time for him," Iraola said, as quoted on the club's official website.
Meanwhile, Frimpong met a different fate. Coming on as a substitute at the start of the second half, the Dutch wing-back lasted only seven minutes before being withdrawn. Iraola suspects Frimpong suffered cramp after the match against LASK in the European competition, which then developed into a new injury.
The decision to play Frimpong was made because Iraola hoped the player could contribute more in attacking situations, especially when Brentford were playing with 10 men. However, the plan did not go smoothly as Frimpong's physical condition ran into trouble again.
The congested fixture schedule is the main focus. Before facing Brentford, Liverpool had just completed an away match in the Champions League. The team arrived back in England late at night, leaving very little recovery time. Iraola described the situation as "very complicated" because he had to choose between playing exhausted players or giving opportunities to players just back from injury.
"We had just played away in the Champions League two days earlier. We arrived back late at night and probably did not get the recovery we should have," said Iraola.
This situation forces Liverpool to quickly draw up a rotation strategy. Losing Szoboszlai and Frimpong reduces squad depth in midfield and on the flanks. Szoboszlai is the attacking engine who often links midfield and attack, while Frimpong provides a pace option on the right side of defense.
For Szoboszlai, the main focus is ensuring the hamstring injury fully heals before returning to the pitch. The recurrence of the same injury suggests the previous rehabilitation process may not have been complete. Meanwhile, Frimpong must undergo further examination to determine the severity of his new injury.
Iraola has not given a definite estimate of how long both players will be sidelined. However, he openly acknowledged that his team will lose both of them for some time. "We will lose Dom and Jeremie for some time, yes," he stressed.
The win over Brentford is indeed a positive result, but these injuries are a task of their own. Liverpool need to monitor the condition of both players before deciding their next steps, especially with the schedule continuing to be congested in the Premier League and Champions League.
Going forward, Liverpool's management faces a dilemma between chasing maximum results or resting key players to avoid worse injuries. The decisions made over the coming weeks will strongly determine the direction of this season.
