Lando Norris may be preparing for the United States Grand Prix in Austin this weekend, but there is another matter that is no less important: the future of his racing team, LN4 Fusion. The team, launched last September, is now awaiting the FIA Formula 2 decision on whether it will secure a place on the grid for the 2027, 2028, and 2029 seasons.
F2 CEO Bruno Michel confirmed that the team selection process is underway and the results will be announced within one to one and a half months. "We run a new selection every three years, alongside the car change," he said. "We are currently in the selection process, and there will be a team list shortly."
Norris himself has not been idle. LN4 Fusion has taken over AIX Racing's assets and submitted an F2 license application. The team has also secured a slot in Formula 3 until the end of 2027, with Gabriel Gomez and James Egozi as drivers. The move is part of Norris's effort to give young drivers an opportunity, as he once experienced himself.
"I was very fortunate to have great people around me throughout my career, and I know that reaching F1 takes more than just talent. You need the right people, the right support, and the right opportunity at the right time," Norris said.
However, the road to the F2 grid is not easy. Michel stressed that the number of teams will not be increased, even though many parties want to join. "The championship is very healthy, but we will not increase the number of teams because that is important for the health of the teams. 22 drivers in F2 is enough, just like 22 drivers in F1," he explained. The decision was taken to maintain competitive balance and the financial stability of existing teams.
For Norris, owning his own racing team is a way to open a path for young talents from Indonesia and Southeast Asia who dream of breaking into F1. Even so, the F2 decision will be decisive. If LN4 Fusion is not selected, Norris will have to look for other alternatives to realize his vision. Conversely, if it succeeds, the team will become a stepping stone for young drivers to show their ability on the international stage.
F2 team selection is indeed not merely about on-track performance, but also about financial sustainability and infrastructure. Michel said that many teams want to join, but F2 must be selective. "We view Norris's application just like any other application. There are many teams that want to enter, but we have to maintain the health of the championship," he stressed.
Norris himself is currently focused on F1 racing. He will race in Austin on 23-25 October. Even so, the upcoming F2 decision could be an important moment for the future of his racing team. Will LN4 Fusion become the birthplace of the next F1 star, or will it have to wait for another opportunity? We will find out within the next month.
