MotoGP Riders Welcome the 850cc Era: Lighter, Safer, and More Fun

MotoGP riders have given a positive assessment of the 2027-generation bike with an 850cc engine that will replace the 1000cc prototype. They consider the new bike lighter, less physically draining, and more fun to ride.
Tests carried out by several teams and test riders show that the 850cc bike has a very different character from the current machine. The difference stems from the smaller engine capacity, a new chassis, reduced reliance on aerodynamics, and the switch of tire supplier from Michelin to Pirelli.
KTM test rider Pol Espargaro stressed that the 2027 rules are a step forward. According to him, the current 1000cc bike places too much physical strain on riders and is riskier because its power is so great. โI choose 850cc. The 1000cc bike is very draining. I think it is more dangerous because the power is much greater,โ he said.
Espargaro explained that Michelin tires are designed to withstand the high torque of the current MotoGP bike. To finish a race, riders must apply big throttle and torque when exiting corners, so the tires have to be very hard to last the whole race. โWith 850cc, everything changes. The bike is much easier, lighter, and the tires can be softer because the bike allows it. Everything becomes simpler, and as I get older, I have no regrets,โ he added.
Honda test rider Takaaki Nakagami highlighted the switch to Pirelli tires as the biggest change for 2027. Asked whether the 850cc bike is more fun, he answered, โFor me, yes. I like it more than the 1000cc. I don't have to think about the rear ride-height device, so it is simpler. The aerodynamic package is also a little smaller. The bike is a bit more natural to maneuver. I like it and enjoy it very much.โ
Honda rider Luca Marini considers the 850cc bike closer to the Moto2 machine, which uses a Triumph 765cc three-cylinder engine and Pirelli tires. He also predicted that riders moving up from Moto2 in 2027 will benefit. โI think riders from Moto2 will have a big advantage compared with the Moto2-to-MotoGP transition in the past. For those who get the chance to go straight to MotoGP in 2027, this is fantastic. I think this is the right moment for them,โ said Marini, who will race for Tech3 KTM next year.
Marini added that many parties now place high expectations on those young riders because the upcoming MotoGP bike may be closer in character to Moto2 than to the current MotoGP machine.
Tech3 rider Maverick Vinales, who is set to leave, called the 850cc bike โa Moto2 with a good engineโ after trying the 2027 KTM at Spielberg last month. โThe new-generation bike is much easier to ride, and physically it is not too demanding either. I did several laps and it felt easy. I completed 11 laps in a row as if it were nothing,โ said the Spanish rider, who is still recovering from injury.
โThe feeling with this bike is very pleasant. It feels like a Moto2 with a good engine. It is truly beautiful,โ he concluded.
With a friendlier bike character, MotoGP 2027 could reduce the risk of injury caused by extreme physical and aerodynamic loads. However, this change also requires teams and manufacturers to adjust their strategies, especially in chassis development and the use of Pirelli tires. Will the 850cc era produce a new dominance by young riders who adapt faster? Time will tell, but the competition toward 2027 is already heating up.
