Malaysia's emphatic 6-0 win over Singapore in the FIFA ASEAN Cup 2026 at Si Jalak Harupat Stadium, Soreang, Bandung Regency, on Thursday (1/10/2026) night, proved insufficient to send Harimau Malaya to the final. The team coached by Kim Pan-gon was eliminated after losing the goal-difference battle to Indonesia, their main rival in the group.
Malaysia defender Daniel Ting expressed his disappointment after the match. Although his team was dominant, he realized the outcome on the pitch was not entirely in their hands. โI don't know much about the goal-difference calculations, we just focused on our match. Winning 6-0, I thought that was enough,โ said the 33-year-old player.
Malaysia had actually been impressive from the start. Harimau Malaya's six goals came from a Bergson hattrick in the 8th, 62nd, and 90+2nd minutes, plus three more from Styatt Wilkin (26'), Paulo Josue (76'), and Syahir Bashah (87'). The win was one of Malaysia's best performances in the tournament, but it was not enough to lift them into the final.
Daniel Ting added that the win was the result of hard work from the whole team. โIt was a strong performance from us. A good match to win, a big score against a big rival,โ he said. Still, he could not hide his disappointment. โIt's very disappointing to know that in the end we couldn't go through,โ he added.
Malaysia's failure was a heavy blow to their ambitions in the tournament held in Indonesia. Previously, Malaysia had hoped to reach the final for the first time in FIFA ASEAN Cup history. However, Indonesia's consistency in other matches halted their progress. Coach Kim Pan-gon also had to accept the reality that his team has yet to compete consistently at the highest level in Southeast Asia.
For Indonesia, the result was a blessing in itself. The Merah Putih team is assured of a place in the final and will face an opponent to be determined later. Full support from home fans is expected to give extra energy to Shin Tae-yong's squad in their bid for the title.
Going forward, Malaysia needs to carry out a thorough evaluation. Despite having quality players such as Bergson and Paulo Josue, consistency and squad depth remain a work in progress. Meanwhile, Indonesia will focus on preparing for the final. Will Harimau Malaya rise again in the next edition, or will Indonesia increasingly dominate ASEAN football? Time will tell.
