The Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR RI) has officially received the presidential letter regarding the replacement of the National Police chief. The letter, dated 30 September, proposes the dismissal of General Listyo Sigit Prabowo and the appointment of Commissioner General Suyudi Ario Seto as the new police chief. The chairman of House Commission III, Habiburokhman, said his panel would immediately schedule a fit and proper test for the sole candidate.
The move marks a new chapter in the leadership of the National Police (Polri). Suyudi, who currently heads the National Narcotics Agency (BNN), is said to have a strong track record within the police force. He previously served as Banten police chief, deputy chief of Metro Jaya police, and Central Jakarta district police chief. His experience across various strategic regions was the president's main consideration in proposing his name.
According to Habiburokhman, the letter was received by House leaders in the morning. "This morning the House leadership received a letter from the president dated 30 September regarding the proposed dismissal from office and appointment to the position of police chief," he said. The statement confirms that the leadership transition within Polri will proceed according to constitutional mechanisms.
The replacement of the police chief always draws public attention because the position is strategic in maintaining national security and law enforcement. Suyudi, if approved, will face major challenges such as combating drugs, terrorism, and internal police reform. His leadership at BNN is seen as an asset for strengthening synergy between Polri and the anti-narcotics agency.
"We will immediately hold a fit and proper test to examine the vision, mission, and commitment of the police chief candidate," Habiburokhman said.
Politically, the proposal also tests the relationship between the executive and the legislature. The House is expected to assess the candidate objectively and transparently. The public is waiting to see whether Suyudi can bring fresh air to Polri, an institution often criticized over professionalism and accountability.
If approved, Suyudi will replace Listyo Sigit Prabowo, who has led Polri since 2021. Listyo is known for various law enforcement policies and pandemic handling. Now the leadership baton is in Suyudi's hands, and he must quickly adapt to increasingly complex security dynamics.
The fit and proper test is scheduled to take place soon. House Commission III will summon Suyudi to present his work program. The outcome of the test will determine whether the House approves the president's proposal. The public hopes the process runs smoothly and produces a trustworthy police chief.
With this replacement, will Polri become more responsive to public aspirations? Only time will tell, but one thing is certain: this leadership transition will reflect the government's commitment to strengthening law enforcement institutions.
