Google Bolsters Demand Gen: One-Click Ads to AI Assistant on YouTube

Google officially announced a series of updates to its Demand Gen service, including an artificial intelligence (AI)-based assistance feature that lets YouTube viewers look up product information without leaving the video, as well as one-click image ads on YouTube Shorts and Gmail. The company also added affiliate location extensions in Google Maps, expanding the reach of local business promotions. The updates began rolling out this week.
The AI assistant feature on YouTube is the main highlight. In a preview shown by Google, viewers can ask questions about products appearing in a video through a bot called Ask YouTube, available beside the playback window. The capability was announced at the Made On YouTube event earlier this week. The move marks Google's effort to integrate shopping and product discovery directly into the viewing experience, reducing the friction that has long pushed viewers to switch to another tab to find information.
Meanwhile, one-click image ads on YouTube Shorts and Gmail are claimed to boost response. According to Google's explanation, advertisers who upload 9:16 full-bleed image ads on Shorts will give consumers a one-click experience. In Gmail, the update simplifies the ad flow on a channel that already performs strongly. Google noted that advertisers who add Gmail to Demand Gen campaigns see an average conversion increase of up to 40% for image creative at the same ROI.
Finally, Google Maps added affiliate location extensions that let businesses display their locations in the map view. The feature is similar to Snapchat's Promoted Places on Snap Map, which delivers business-specific content in map listings and can potentially draw local consumer interest. For retail and service businesses in Indonesia, this feature could become a new channel to reach nearby customers, especially in high-mobility big cities.
"On Shorts, you and customers will benefit from a one-click experience when you upload 9:16 full-bleed image ads. On Gmail, this update simplifies the ad experience on a channel that already delivers strong performance," Google explained in its announcement.
The Demand Gen updates reinforce Google's direction of automating and simplifying cross-channel ad campaigns. For advertisers in Indonesia, the AI integration on YouTube could boost user engagement, but it also demands greater content creativity so as not to get lost among the videos. Meanwhile, one-click ads on Shorts and Gmail can be an efficiency opportunity, especially for MSMEs that want to reach a wider audience on a limited budget.
Looking ahead, the question is how quickly these features will be adopted in the Indonesian market and how Google will compete with other platforms such as TikTok and Meta, which are also aggressively developing AI-based advertising. Industry players need to watch whether the promised conversion gains truly materialize in the local context, or instead add complexity to managing digital campaigns.
