Warner Bros. has officially shared photos from the set of its latest film, The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum, showing a green Shire and a group of Hobbits going about their day. The photos first surfaced on TikTok and immediately sparked fan speculation, especially because one image shows the back of a Hobbit widely believed to be Frodo Baggins, played again by Elijah Wood.
In the photo, Andy Serkisโwho also directs the filmโcan be seen directing the camera, while a cart hauls giant pumpkins and several Hobbits watch ducks in a pond. Warner Bros. released the photos to mark Hobbit Day on 22 September, which coincides with the birthdays of Frodo and Bilbo Baggins. The presence of the Shire in these photos seems to confirm that the prequel will touch on the early part of the story that was not adapted in the 2001 trilogy.
The decision to bring Elijah Wood back as Frodo marks a nostalgia strategy that is increasingly common in Hollywood. Although Wood is now 45, de-aging technology will be used to match his appearance to the younger Frodo of the original trilogy. A similar approach is being applied to Ian McKellen as Gandalf and Andy Serkis as Gollum, who return to their iconic roles. However, the arrival of new actors such as Kate Winslet as Marigol, Anya Taylor-Joy as Seren, Jamie Dornan as Strider (Aragorn), and Leo Woodall as Halvard shows that the film is not relying solely on familiar faces.
"We want to bring audiences back to the Shire, but with a story they have never seen on the big screen," said a source from the production, as quoted from an industry report.
Story-wise, The Hunt for Gollum is expected to fill the gap between Bilbo's 111th birthday party and Gandalf's return to the Shire, which in the novel The Fellowship of the Ring marks the start of the search for the ring. Gandalf tasks Aragorn with tracking Gollum to confirm the origin of Bilbo's ring and whether it is truly the One Ring that Sauron seeks. This thread was trimmed from the 2001 film, giving the filmmakers room for new exploration.
For the Indonesian market, the film has the potential to be a box office magnet given the large Lord of the Rings fan base, especially among millennials and Gen Z. The presence of top actors such as Kate Winslet and Anya Taylor-Joy could draw audiences beyond the loyal fan base. Still, challenges remain: will nostalgia and de-aging technology be enough to deliver a fresh cinematic experience, or will it get trapped in the shadow of Peter Jackson's trilogy? In addition, a release date that clashes with Avengers: Secret Wars could split audience attention, though on the other hand it could create a double-feature phenomenon in the style of Barbenheimer.
With the release date still two years away, Warner Bros. will likely keep building anticipation through behind-the-scenes content. The question is whether The Hunt for Gollum can win over a new generation without losing Tolkien's epic essence, or whether it will end up as merely a safe nostalgia reunion. Time will tell, but one thing is certain: the Shire always manages to call us home.
