BBC will hold a large-scale tribute concert to celebrate two decades of Amy Winehouse's legendary album, Back to Black, on 21 October at the Roundhouse, London. Titled Amy Winehouse: Back to Black at 20, the event will feature a lineup of top singers performing every song on the album in full.
Names such as Baby Rose, Corinne Bailey Rae, FLO, Jessie Reyez, Jorja Smith, Lianne La Havas, Nia Smith, Sasha Keable, Skye Newman, and Yebba have been confirmed to appear in turn. They will be backed by The Amy Winehouse Band, the original formation of musicians who accompanied Amy during her lifetime. The concert is produced by the creative team behind the Back to Black album, including Mark Ronson, Salaam Remi, Dale Davis, Paul O'Duffy, p*nut, and Darcus Beese.
The performance is a rare moment because the album, released in 2006, will be played in full from start to finish, bringing back hits such as "Rehab", "You Know I'm No Good", and "Back to Black". For fans of soul and jazz music, this concert is not merely nostalgia, but a recognition of Amy Winehouse's influence that is still felt today.
BBC is not only broadcasting the main concert. They are turning the commemoration into a full day of programming. Before the concert, a dedicated channel on iPlayer will air Amy's classic BBC performances. After the concert, BBC Two will air documentaries and special archive material celebrating her legacy. Radio 2 will also rebroadcast Amy Winehouse: Legacy of a Lioness, a two-part program featuring Alexandra Burke, Ella Henderson, Emeli Sandรฉ, Jessie Ware, and Mabel reflecting on Amy's influence.
On 23 October, BBC Radio 6 Music will dedicate the entire day to Amy Winehouse Forever. The program will feature Nick Grimshaw, Deb Grant, Craig Charles, Huw Stephens, and Femi Koleoso sharing stories, interviews, and rare session recordings, including Amy's 2003 performance at Maida Vale and conversations with Dale Davis, Ade Omotayo, and Dionne Bromfield. As a complement, BBC will release Amy Winehouse Artist Collection on 20 October, featuring live sets, interviews, and session highlights on BBC Sounds.
"Amy Winehouse was an extraordinary talent whose songs continue to be loved by many. We are proud to celebrate the enduring appeal of Amy's work through this special concert broadcast, alongside various performances recorded by the BBC throughout her career," said Lorna Clarke, Director of Music at the BBC.
For the global music industry, the 20th anniversary of Back to Black affirms Amy's position as an icon who transcends her generation. The album not only won five Grammy Awards, but also became a bridge between classic soul and modern pop. The concert is also a platform for younger singers to affirm Amy's influence in their work.
In Indonesia, the wave of appreciation for Amy Winehouse is also felt. Digital streaming platforms record a year-on-year increase in listeners of Amy's songs, especially among millennials and Gen Z. Although this concert is not being held in Indonesia, the digital broadcasts on BBC iPlayer and BBC Sounds can be accessed via the internet, allowing fans in the country to watch it live or through replays. However, it should be noted that access to BBC streaming services in Indonesia may require a VPN or a certain subscription, so not everyone can enjoy it freely.
Going forward, this commemoration could prompt music labels and promoters in Asia, including Indonesia, to hold similar tributes involving local musicians. With Indonesia's rich history of soul and jazz music, it is possible that a tribute concert for Amy Winehouse curated by Indonesian musicians could be held. Will this wave of nostalgia encourage more cross-generational collaborations in the national music industry?
