Two-time Oscar-winning actor Mahershala Ali has openly expressed his agreement that the failure of the Blade film project was one of the heaviest blows in the career of Kevin Feige, president of Marvel Studios. In an interview with GQ, Ali admitted he still does not know the exact reason behind the cancellation of the film, which had been announced at San Diego Comic-Con 2019.
โThat's a question for Kevin Feige. I don't know why this project failed to this day. I only know that Kevin said this was the biggest failure of his career, and I agree 100 percent. He should feel that way,โ Ali said, as quoted by GQ.
Ali, who at the time made a surprise appearance on the Comic-Con stage alongside Feige, revealed that he had invested no small amount of time and energy. He admitted he had to turn down various other project offers because his schedule was contractually tied to Marvel. โI spent a year training, even to the point where I injured my knee. I actually moved and brought my family to Atlanta. We waited there, but they kept delaying and delaying, until in the end nothing happened,โ he recalled.
Ali's disappointment is not without reason. The Blade project itself went through various changes in the director's chair. Bassam Tariq, who was initially appointed as director, stepped down two months before filming was set to begin in September 2022. His position was taken over by Yann Demange, but he too departed in June 2024. A number of screenwriters also came and went during the development process.
Feige himself once acknowledged this failure on the Happy Sad Confused podcast. โI feel like a loser and a failure for not being able to bring this project to life with Mahershala,โ he said. He explained that at the time Marvel was too focused on the quantity of content for Disney+, so quality was neglected. โWe didn't want to just slap on a leather costume and let it kill vampires. It had to be unique. We weren't sure we could make it great, and we didn't want to force that on Mahershala or on ourselves,โ Feige added.
โIn the end, this failure became a hidden blessing. It helped me stop waiting for the golden ticket and start building my own path.โ โ Mahershala Ali
Although the Blade project fell through, Ali said he took a valuable lesson from it. He is now more focused on developing his own career without depending on one big project. โI'm no longer waiting for the golden ticket. I'm starting to build my own path,โ he said.
For the Indonesian entertainment industry, this story serves as a mirror of the importance of production management and expectations in large-scale film projects. The failure of Blade shows that even a studio of Marvel's caliber can stumble when it is too ambitious without careful planning. This is relevant for domestic production houses that often face similar challenges, especially in managing schedules and the commitments of their stars.
Going forward, will Marvel try again to revive Blade with a different approach? Or is this instead a sign that the era of oversized superhero films is starting to lose momentum? What is clear is that for Mahershala Ali, a new chapter has begunโwithout having to wait for a green light from anyone else.
