The New York Times (NYT) has again released its daily word puzzle Connections for Wednesday, 23 September 2025, with four groups of words for players to solve. The game challenges linguistic analysis and cultural association, while reinforcing NYT's position as a digital content giant capable of monetizing users' small habits.
Connections presents 16 words that must be grouped into four colored categories: yellow (easiest), green, blue, and purple (hardest). In this edition, the yellow category contains items commonly carried when leaving home, such as keys, phone, sunglasses, and wallet. The green category highlights internet obstacles, from age verification, CAPTCHA, cookie consent, to paywall. Meanwhile, the blue category covers products packaged in cans, such as sweetened condensed milk, paint, shaving cream, and spam. As for the purple category, the most challenging, it requires players to find words ending in synonyms of 'term', such as Bitcoin, record label, rub-a-dub, and Suriname.
Though it seems simple, Connections is not just a casual game. Since its launch in 2023, it has become one of NYT Games' flagship products, alongside Wordle and Spelling Bee. The business model is clear: NYT offers limited free access, then pushes players to subscribe to All Access or Games to unlock archives and additional features. This strategy has proven effective. In the last quarter, NYT reported significant digital revenue growth, with games as one of the main contributors.
The Connections phenomenon also highlights a shift in digital consumer behavior. Amid a flood of short video content and social media, text-based games are able to retain user loyalty. The reason, according to game industry observers, is that Connections offers instant intellectual satisfaction and can be completed in a short time, fitting the rhythm of modern life. No wonder many users share their results on social media, creating an organic viral effect.
"Games like Connections give a small sense of achievement that makes people come back every day. This is a subtle but powerful form of gamification," said a digital media analyst who declined to be named.
In Indonesia, this phenomenon could be a valuable lesson for local game developers and media platforms. Although the domestic game market is dominated by big titles such as Mobile Legends or PUBG Mobile, there is a gap for light games in Indonesian that elevate local wisdom. Imagine a word game that groups terms like 'rendang, sate, soto, gulai' or 'angklung, gamelan, kolintang, sasando'. The market potential is large, especially if integrated with a subscription model or non-intrusive advertising.
However, the main challenge is not just the idea, but execution and consistency. NYT is able to maintain the quality of its daily puzzles with a dedicated editorial team that ensures each edition is challenging yet fair. On the other hand, local developers often struggle to retain their user base due to a lack of content updates and retention strategies. Yet, as Connections shows, the key is creating a daily habit that is hard to abandon.
Going forward, the question is whether Indonesian media or developers dare to create a 'local version of Connections' that not only entertains but also enriches vocabulary and cultural knowledge. If successful, it is not impossible for such a game to become an entry point for more sustainable digital content monetization. Who will seize that opportunity?
