Channel 4 has confirmed that its latest drama series, Army of Shadows, will be bolstered by two Academy Award-winning actresses: Susan Sarandon and Olivia Colman. The news marks a significant step for the project, which is currently in production in Paris and London.
The involvement of Sarandon and Colman was announced directly by Channel 4 together with Studiocanal and Two Cities Television. Although their roles have not been revealed, their presence adds weight to a cast that already includes Kit Harington, Paddy Considine, America Ferrera, and Alex Hassell. The combination of these names indicates major ambition behind the scenes.
The series is an adaptation of the 1969 film Army of Shadows by legendary director Jean-Pierre Melville, which was based on Joseph Kessel's novel. The original story focuses on the French Resistance against the Nazi occupation during World War II. This new version, however, offers a twist: a Britain under occupation. The screenplay is written by Ronan Bennett, who previously created the series MobLand.
The official synopsis describes a Britain that appears normal, but with different flags, censored news, and people reluctant to speak openly. Amid this situation, a former soldier named Berry builds a secret resistance network. He is joined by a group of ordinary people—soldiers, students, radiographers, journalists—who decide to no longer look away. They face a state with unlimited reach, a ruthless minister, and an American intelligence operative named Jessie.
"Army of Shadows is a tense, propulsive thriller about what a resistance really costs. If your country were occupied, what would you do?" the synopsis reads.
For Indonesian audiences, a project like this can serve as a mirror for issues of resistance, surveillance, and sovereignty that often appear in public discourse. In addition, distribution of the series through global streaming platforms allows broader access, including in Indonesia, although there has been no official announcement regarding a release date or local distribution partner. The Indonesian entertainment industry can learn from the way Channel 4 packages historical narrative with world-class stars and a touch from a renowned creator.
With a solid cast and a strong premise, Army of Shadows has the potential to become one of the most anticipated series. The question is whether this adaptation can match or even surpass the reputation of its classic film. Time will tell, but enthusiasm in the global market is already evident.
