Malaysia national team striker Fergus Tierney drew attention during Harimau Malaya's first training session at Field B of Gelora Bung Karno, Jakarta, on Tuesday (22/9/2026) evening WIB. The 23-year-old was seen following a training program separate from his teammates, raising questions about his condition ahead of the FIFA ASEAN Cup 2026.
In the session open to media, Tierney was accompanied only by a fitness coach, while the other players trained collectively on a different side of the pitch. Although there has been no official confirmation from the medical team, fatigue from the long journey from Europe to Jakarta—covering more than 20 hours of flight—is suspected to be the main cause. Tierney had just played for Cypriot club Omonia 29th May in recent matches.
Tierney's decision to leave Johor Darul Ta'zim for Omonia 29th May in the 2026 summer transfer window proved his ambition to gain experience in a European league. So far, he has appeared in four official matches and contributed one goal and one assist. That performance keeps him in consideration for the Malaysia squad, even as competition in the attacking line grows tighter.
The presence of Bergson da Silva, who has just officially become a Malaysian citizen, adds an option in the attacking line. Coach Tan Cheng Hoe now has many alternatives, but must also carefully manage playing minutes and players' physical condition. Tierney, with his experience in the Cypriot league, remains a valuable asset if he is in prime condition.
"We have to make sure all players are in the best condition. Separate training is part of the recovery program, not an indication of a serious injury," said an internal team source as quoted from Malaysian media reports.
For Indonesia, the dynamics in the Malaysian camp are a particular concern. As one of the main rivals at the ASEAN Cup 2026, Malaysia's attacking strength will heavily influence the competitive map of Group B, which also includes Vietnam and the Philippines. If Tierney is absent or not at peak performance, Indonesia's chances of dominating the opponent's defense could be more open. However, the presence of Bergson da Silva remains a serious threat.
The FIFA ASEAN Cup 2026 itself is a proving ground for Southeast Asian teams after the new format was introduced. Malaysia, placed in Group B, will begin its campaign against Vietnam on 26 September. Meanwhile, Indonesia in Group A will face Thailand in the opening match. A meeting between the two teams will only happen if both advance to the knockout stage.
Tierney's fitness will continue to be monitored. If he recovers in time, a partnership with Bergson da Silva could be a deadly combination. Conversely, if his condition does not allow it, Tan Cheng Hoe must quickly prepare an alternative plan. The Malaysian public hopes the separate training is only part of load management, not a bad sign.
It will be interesting to see how Tan Cheng Hoe's strategy shapes Harimau Malaya's attacking line. Will Tierney remain the first choice, or will Bergson da Silva take over the role? The answer will be seen in the opening match against Vietnam.
