Indonesia national team coach John Herdman took a firm step by dropping two players from the squad for the FIFA ASEAN Cup 2026. Dony Tri Pamungkas and Yakob Sayuri must leave the training camp due to fitness and health issues that have not recovered.
The decision was announced by Herdman after leading the first training session at Stadion Madya, Central Jakarta, Tuesday (22/9/2026). According to him, Dony Tri's condition, still hampered by injury, means the Persija Jakarta player must return to his club for further recovery. "Dony Tri was returned to the club after undergoing a fitness examination. We felt the best decision for him was to return to the club to undergo the recovery process," said Herdman.
Meanwhile Yakob Sayuri, a Malut United player, is currently hospitalized due to illness. Herdman expressed his prayers and hopes that Yakob recovers soon. "Unfortunately, Yakob Sayuri is ill and is currently being treated in hospital. We pray for his quick recovery," he added.
Dony Tri had actually been called up to the national team even though he had not fully recovered from injury. The injury also caused him to miss Persija's first three matches in the BRI Super League 2026/2027. This condition forced Herdman to look for other options in the back line.
As replacements, Herdman called up Shayne Pattynama from Persija and Rizky Eka Pratama from PSM Makassar. "Therefore, we brought Rizky Eka Pratama into the team to replace him, while Shayne Pattynama will replace Dony Tri," Herdman explained.
